Macbeth Scene IV By: Denny Williams, Jared Hutchinson, Tamia Hawkins, Nick Sollon

Answer- His tone and attitude change when Macbeth says “ Now I’m scared again.” Question 1 - Lines What evidence in Macbeth’s conversation with the murderer reveals Macbeth's abrupt change in tone and attitude regarding the events surrounding Banquo’s Murder?

Question 2- Lines Which sentences are spoken by Macbeth as an aside? How can you tell where the aside begins and ends? Answer- From “ Then comes my fit again” to “ to saucy doubts and fears.”. You can tell it is an aside because of the dash mark after the sentence. (---) Also it does not sound like something he would say to someone so the reader would have to assume it is an aside.

Question 3: Point out and analyze the words Macbeth uses to indicate his feelings about the news of Fleance Answer- “The worm that’s fled hath nature that in time will venom breed.” Here Macbeth is talking about Fleance escaping. He is saying that over time Fleance may hurt his chances at being king and when he has kids they will become kings also.

Question 4- The ghost of Banquo sits in Macbeth’s seat, but only Macbeth can see him. Are we to believe Banquo’s ghost is there or Macbeth is losing his mind? Answer- Macbeth is losing his mind because of all of the bad things he has done and it made him lose it.

Question 5- Macbeth says he fears nothing, except the ghost. Why does he fear the ghost over anything else? What else should he fear? Answer: He fears the ghost because it is like the devil. He should really fear the reality of him killing king Duncan.

Question 6- Macbeth is growing increasingly desperate. Why? He is king, finally … but what does he fear at the scene’s end? Answer: The fact that he had killed the prior king is starting to really get to him. He fears Fleance coming back for him.

Aside “Then comes my fit again. I had else been perfect, Whole as the marble, founded as the rock, As broad and general as the casing air. But now I am cabined, cribbed, confined, bound in To saucy doubts and fears.” Lines In this aside Macbeth shows his annoyance with Fleance surviving. His plan would have been perfect had Fleance died with Banquo that night.

Metaphor “Approach thou like the rugged Russian bear, The armed rhinoceros, or th' Hyrcan tiger; Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves Shall never tremble. Or be alive again,” Act 3 Scene 4 lines Macbeth speaks to Banquo’s ghost and declares for him to come at him, and he will not fear him.

Personification “There’s an old saying: the dead will have their revenge. Gravestones have been known to move, and trees to speak, to bring guilty men to justice.” Lines This personification spoken by Macbeth shows how the dead will have their revenge by a form of karma. Since Macbeth has murdered to become king, he is not worthy to be a king and the world will be chaotic until it is fixed.

Tone/Mood “You have displaced the mirth, broke the good meeting, With most admired disorder.” The mood changes suddenly by ruining their good time.

Conflict Macbeth has conflict with the ghost when it arrives at the dinner table, he talks to it but it does speak back. He is afraid of it. “What man dare, I dare. Approach thou like the rugged Russian bear, The armed rhinoceros, or th’ Hyrcan tiger; Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves Shall never tremble. Or be alive again” He also has conflict with his wife when he starts talking to it. she questions his manhood again and he says “Ay, and a bold one, that dare look on that which might appall the devil.” then she says, “O proper stuff! This is the very painting of your fear. This is the air-drawn dagger which you said led you to Duncan.” She is saying that he’s just hallucinating again and isn’t really scared.
