Essential Elements Sept 29, 2011

 So you are made of elements!! You are made of matter…

Of 118 elements ….. 30 are “Essential” for human life You are made of matter… Oxygen (O) Nitrogen (N) Carbon (C) Phosphorus (P) Hydrogen (H) Calcium (Ca) Sodium (Na) Potassium (K) Sulfur (S) Chlorine (Cl) Iron (Fe) Magnesium (Mg)

You are made of matter… Your body can’t make matter or elements… so……..

 Vitamins You are made of matter… Carbon (C) Nitrogen (N) Oxygen (O) Large molecules containing mostly Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen Hydrogen (H)

Minerals & Metals You are made of matter… Sodium (Na) Calcium (Ca) Iron (Fe) Phosphorus (P) Zinc (Fe) Magnesium (Mg) Potassium (K)

You are made of matter… Average person has 4 GRAMS of Iron in their BLOOD!! Iron (Fe) Hemoglobin carries oxygen to your cells You need 18 milligrams each day to be healthy

Todays Lab “Total” Cereal 2 Beakers (1*50 mL 1* 125mL) Mortar & Pestle Magnet Water

Todays Lab Make sure you write a hypothesis! If I (do this)…… I think (this will happen)…… because (I know this)

Todays Lab Read the entire lab BEFORE starting ANYTHING!! 1.You only need ~50mL of cereal 2.Magnet 3.Skip step 9 (just look at your magnet) 4.Pour out water……Wet cereal in trash
