8 So You Want to Find… Scrapbooks Library: Special Collections Library Material Type: Archives & Manuscripts LC Subj Heading: “Scrapbooks” Always use the plural for the genre term

9 So You Want to Find Manuscript music Library: Special Collections Library Material Type: Archives & Manuscripts LC Subj Heading: “Scores” If you search Material Type: Music Score, you’ll retrieve printed/published, not manuscript, items Always use the plural for the genre term

10 So You Want to Find Daguerreotypes Library: Special Collections Library Material Type: Multimedia Material LC Subj Heading: “Daguerreotypes” For other photographs, use “Photographs,” “Black-and-white photographs,” “Tintypes,” etc.

11 So You Want to Find Architectural drawings Library: Special Collections Library Material Type: Multimedia Material LC Subj Heading: “Architectural drawings” For specific types of drawings, use “Site plans,” Floor plans,” “Detail drawings,” etc.

12 So You Want to Find Postcards Library: Special Collections Library LC Subj Heading: “Postcards” Use “postcards” for picture postcards; “postal cards” for non-graphic, plain cards Material Type: Multimedia Material Retrieves single postcards treated as visual material Material Type: Archives & Manuscripts Retrieves postcards as part of a manuscript collection

Thesaurus terms are assigned by catalogers using Library of Congress Subject Headings Art and Architecture Thesaurus Thesaurus of Graphic Materials Genre terms display as LC Subject Headings in the CAT Terminology – not always intuitive If used as genre term, e.g., photographs, in Art & Architecture Thesaurus, search this term in LC Subj Heading If you don’t find anything for a term you think is valid, e.g., pop-up books, search as Keyword (LC subject heading term is actually Toy and Moveable Books)

17 Searching Tips Start at the highest level, In Library: Special Collections Library (UP) to get the broadest coverage If too broad, narrow by Material Type Narrow by Location Add Genre term in LC Subj Heading Use Keyword as a last resort
