Welcome to Mr. Lam’s Biology Class! Agenda 8/19 1.Do Now! with Starter #1 2.Quiz on Lab safety 3.MSDS 4.Emergency procedures 5.Homework and Reminders

Agenda 8/19 Do Now! Quietly doing the following: Pick up handouts from the counter located at the front left corner of classroom (next to Make up folder bin) Take out your name card and put in front of you Turn in summer assignment by giving them to the students who sit in the isles (toward the middle of the class, not toward the wall or window on both sides. I will come and pick them up. If you don’t have it, get a pink slip and fill it out and also turn in. Section 1: Hypothesis & Variable Statements Section 2: Data Analysis and Graphing

Composition Book Table of Content: MSDS Starter #2 and lesson objectives

Starter #1 and Objectives Starter: 1.Why is it so important to follow laboratory safety policies and procedures? Objectives: 1.Interpret the information on a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS); 2.Understand and demonstrate emergency procedures in the laboratory. **Discuss starter and students read objectives

Agenda 8/19 1.Do Now! with Starter #1 2.Syllabus (on my webpage, read, sign and return) 3.Quiz on Lab safety 4.MSDS 5.Emergency procedures 6.Homework and Reminders

Quick Lab Safety Quiz 5 minutes

MSDS Notes A Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is a valuable resource to have in a science lab. The MSDS lists all the hazards and proper waste disposal techniques associated with a chemical. It contains information regarding the proper procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of a chemical substance. (talk with your table: why MSDS is useful and important?)

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Hazard Labels –A. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has developed a visual guide for a number of chemicals pertinent to the MSDS. –B. The diamond is broken into four sections (blue, red, yellow, and white). The symbols and numbers in the four sections indicate the degree of hazard associated with a particular chemical or material.

Health Hazard (Blue) 4 Danger May be fatal on short exposure. Specialized protective equipment required 3 Warning Corrosive or toxic. Avoid skin contact or inhalation 2 Warning May be harmful if inhaled or absorbed 1 Caution May be irritating 0 No unusual hazard

Flammability (Red) 4 Danger Flammable gas or extremely flammable liquid 3 Warning Combustible liquid, flashpoint below 100 °F 2 Caution Combustible liquid, flashpoint of 100° to 200 °F 1 Combustible if heated 0 Not combustible

Reactivity (Yellow) 4 Danger Explosive material at room temperature 3 Danger May be explosive if shocked, heated under confinement, or mixed with water 2 Warning Unstable or may react violently if mixed with water 1 Caution May react if heated or mixed with water but not violently 0 Stable Not reactive when mixed with water

Special Notice Key (White) W Water Reactive OX Oxidizing Agent

3-2-1 Summary Write: 3 things you learned 2 examples, applications, or inferences about what you’ve learned 1 question (or draw 1 conclusion) Stand up, find a partner, and do a ‘walk and talk’ sharing your summaries Add at least one more idea to your summary

MSDS Activity Group reading and answering MSDS questions (2 per groups, find someone with the same or most close to your B-Day – 20 seconds) Go over it.

Homework and Reminders Summer Assignment Due Dates  Monday 8/22/16 and Tuesday 8/23/16 Section 3: Vocabulary Section 4: Animal Observation HW: read chapter 1.1 and 1.2  Friday 8/26/16 Section 5: Multiple Intelligence Test  Turn in ASAP From this Friday to Next week: What is an Honor Student with signatures Lab Safety Contract with signature Syllabus with signature
