Digital Video SEWA ENRAP National meeting May 16-17, 2005

Objectives Build members’ capacity to make them communicate effectively. Spreading awareness of issues & implementing practical solutions “Video is a powerful & honest communication medium which should be in the hands of common people in a country like ours”. - Ela R. Bhatt Founder - SEWA

The workshops included: Teaching basic digital camera operations. Refreshing basics of the district team. Teaching script writing and film editing to the Planning & Monitoring Unit staff. The Second phase: More focused as teams had specific topics to work. Refreshed basics of editing & cleared doubts Video SEWA staff had never explored the medium.

Outcome of Workshop Participants shot, scripted and edited their own films. Two film pieces made in the end- an achievement. Such tools empower women to think about their problems in a large perspective. It has helped women believe their raw ideas can materialise into solid actions.

Feedback A. Useful Aspects A. Useful Aspects : The districts staff & PMU got a first hand exposure of Digital Video Documentation. The rural women had most modern-powerful communication tool in their hands for the first time. Women staying at the grassroots can express their issues in their own ways. SEWA Video staff gained as they experimented & explored the cameras & editing software to a maximum.

B. Possible Improvements A regular program is needed instead of one short- term workshop. Will inform about latest tools & technologies & inspires to continue. We are unable to provide cameras and related equipments. Other mediums & tools of communication be taught- designing posters, print communication, radio etc. are feasible options in rural areas.

Films Shot, Scripted & Edited by Participants
