Digital Library for Earth System Education Integrating Research and Education

What is DLESE? A geoscience community project integrating the contributions of individuals, projects, institutions, and organizations into a resource supporting teaching and learning about the Earth

DLESE Vision Rapid, sophisticated access to collections of peer-reviewed teaching and learning resources Interfaces and tools to allow student exploration of Earth data sets Services to help users effectively create and use materials A community center to facilitate sharing and collaboration

Infusing Earth Knowledge and the Process of Discovery into Education Research Experiences For students, teachers, public On site or at home Professional Development Opportunities For researchers and educators New Learning Resources With up-to-date content and pedagogy Incorporating research on learning In the classroom, on the web, at the museum

How can DLESE help? A distribution mechanism For data, tools, curricula, etc. For opportunities Review mechanisms enhance resources An intellectual commons A meeting place Sharing information and ideas Working on projects Articulating our dreams Recognition for hard work Through resource review mechanisms Through DLESE evaluation

Information Streaming An effective pipeline of useable information and resources reflecting state-of-the-art understanding of the Earth system from research to classroom and public Includes both accessible data and the information, learning resources, and tools needed to enable effective interpretation by an interested lay person or student Requires an integrated effort by all parts of the research, undergraduate, K-12, informal and science policy communities

Supporting the Educator in All of Us Opportunities for Professional Development For Graduate Students, Professors, Research Scientists, K-12 Teachers, and other Educators New Content Knowledge Teaching Methods and Collaboration Skills Research Opportunities Supporting Communities and Resources

Assuring the Geoscience Workforce for Tomorrow Cradle to grave professional development Developing a diverse geoscience workforce

A Second Return Flow— Enhancing Geoscience Research with Research on Learning How do we visualize? What does research on learning tell us that will help our science? How do we work together effectively? How can research on collaborative learning help us create more productive lab environments?

A Geoscience Community Engaged in Research and Education Our strength is in our diversity Partnerships to use our full strength DLESE can Enable new kinds of partnerships Brokered Partnerships Community Developed Materials Aggregating Contributions Over Time and Space Help pull our efforts together into a whole that is more than the sum of its parts

Whither Next? DLESE Working Groups Data interfaces and tools Diversity Integrating research and education? DLESE Community Center Opportunites: Tool Soon/ Brute Force Now Information Gateway Pages Integrating Research and Education Diversity K-12 efforts

DLESE Opportunities Tonight and Tomorrow Cocktails 5:30-7 Pacific C Room, Mariott Posters Tomorrow PM Spring AGU DLESE and Digital Earth: Bridging Multidimensional Data Resources for Educators DLESE Workshop Annual Meeting August 2-4, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff

Join the Fun-- Contribute Resources Engage in Committees Participate in the Community Center Join Working Groups Submit User Scenarios Develop a Project

Students Exploring Data The Dream An integrated Earth/Space data set with tools for visualization and analysis that enable students to follow their own questioning paths in any direction through space and time. Supporting materials useable in class or independently that guide learners from no knowledge to the level of understanding needed to successfully interpret the data.
