Teaching Safety Practices

TV Safety Guidelines Limit the number of TV-watching hours Keep TVs out of kids' bedrooms. Turn off the TV during meals. Use screening tools Watch with kids and talk to them about what they see on TV Check the TV reviews and ratings. Set a good example.

Internet Safety Guidelines Become computer literate. Keep the computer in a common area. Share an account with younger children. Bookmark your child's favorite sites. Spend time online together. Teach your kids appropriate online behavior. Monitor kids use of chat rooms. Find out and use online protection

Predator Warning Signs Warning signs of a child being targeted by an online predator include: – spending long hours online, especially at night –phone calls from people you don't know –unsolicited gifts arriving in the mail –child suddenly turns off the computer when you walk into the room –withdrawal from family life –reluctance to discuss online activities

Stranger Danger Teach children: –A stranger is anyone you don’t know –To not go with a person just because they look safe or “normal” –To scream and run if a stranger tries to give him or her food or a ride Practice recognizing strangers zzes/l/bl_strngdngr.htm

Is this person a stranger? Remember that just because a person looks safe or 'normal' doesn't mean that they aren't a stranger.

Are these people strangers ? This is a stranger because you don't know them, not because they may look dangerous or 'different'.

Is this person a stranger? Just because a person looks safe or 'normal' doesn't mean that they aren't a stranger.

Is this person a stranger? Just because a person looks safe or 'normal' doesn't mean that they aren't a stranger.

One more thing Teach a child about the “uh-oh” feeling. They should report to a trusted adult anything that someone else does that makes them feel uncomfortable. This includes all relatives.
