Dramatic and Expressive Self Portraits Advanced Studio Art Media Breadth Project 1

For this project, you will be creating a self portrait in graphite.

The goal of this assignment will be to create a self portrait that is interesting, and artistic, rather than just informational.

Although these portraits are drawn well, they are not expressive. The compositions are not exciting and basically pretty boring.

Take a look at this self portrait again. How has the artist made this more interesting?

What about in this one?

Or this one? How is this portrait expressive?

These images show the viewer looking straight ahead. Are they still dramatic and interesting?

Be creative with how you approach your self portrait. Your composition is important, and it’s not always the front of the face that creates a successful work of art.

Take your time with the material and use it to it’s full potential.

Don’t be afraid to make expressive marks with the graphite.

The importance of value should never be overlooked.

You may also choose to add props to your self portrait to help convey a message.

Consider positive and negative space and how they will work together to enhance your work.

Journal Assignment #1 (2-3 Pages) Write 3 aspects that you plan to include in your self portrait. (ex. Good use of value, expressive marks, somber mood) For each aspect you are planning to include, if possible, explain how you will accomplish this in your finished work. Create 5 thumbnail drawings planning your composition. Include notes on how you will control viewer’s eye movement, handle positive and negative space, and other information on how you will be successful.
