There are 12 tables in a cafeteria. Five students sit at each of the first 11 tables. Three students sit at the last table How many students are sitting at the 12 tables in the cafeteria? ? There are 58 student in the cafeteria 55+3=58
Let’s count to five … ! Where are those numbers on our number line? They are in between 0 and 5 … even if we can see them, we can imagine they are there (11 X 5) + 3 Let’s mark 58 on our number line. We’ll count by fives to 55 then put in some smaller tick marks to help us find 58. Can we write that process of finding 58 as a multiplication sentence? Yes, we can!!!
Let’s find 37 minutes, then show it as a multiplication sentence (7 x 5) + 2 = (2 x 5) + 3 =13 How about 13 minutes? What TIME did we plot? 7:37 What TIME did we plot? 7:13
(9 x 5) + 4 = (0 x 5) + 2 = 02 7:49 Plot 49 minutes Plot 2 minutes 7:02
