Nonprofit Votes Count is a campaign to provide America’s nonprofits with resources and tools they need to get their staff, volunteers and other stakeholders registered to vote and voting. In 2012, CalNonprofits launched the “Vote with Your Mission” campaign. The campaign’s goal is to have 100% of eligible nonprofit staff, board members, and volunteers vote. And to: o Re-frame California’s nonprofit community as a significant segment of the voting public o Increase voting by nonprofit staff, board members, volunteers and constituents o Raise the issue of voter engagement to nonprofits of every size and from every community VOTE WITH YOUR MISSION VWYM

GETTING STARTED Making a Plan

Establish Buy-In: Get buy- in from you’re your executives and staff Choose a champion: someone who will be the point person for your voter engagement work ESTABLISH BUY IN Step 1

Identify staff and volunteers who will be involved Get riled up! Provide a rationale for the work Initial training: Make sure they have the skills they need. Ongoing training and support: Periodically review with staff what they need to know, provide materials and resources STAFF UP AND TRAIN Train

Learn about voting in your state –Nonprofit VOTE’s Voting in Your State Tool: –Reach out to your local elections officials Review nonpartisan guidelines –Nonprofit VOTE’s online guide to c3 rules: elections-online/ LEARN THE VOTING RULES Rules

When registering someone to vote: You may not suggest which candidate to support or which political party to join You may explain what it means to register without party affiliation You may provide nonpartisan voter guides or encourage people to ask friends or neighbors to learn more about the candidates GUIDELINES FOR VOTER REG Guidelines

Make an announcement at a staff meeting or in a company wide communication about your voter registration drive or other activities –Use our template kick-off from your ED/CEO or a Board member to staff Create visibility with posters, flyers, and internal communications KICK OFF & PROMOTION KickOff
