To encourage students across the country to learn abut NASA’s science experiments performed on the International Space Station (ISS) and develop an interesting and informative project to help educate the world about ISS Science.

1. Students learn about ISS NASA-sponsored science experiments. 2. They select one experiment matching an area of interest. 3. Then an informative project is developed. 4. The project is submitted to NASA. 5. Selected projects are posted on the ISS Program Science Website to educate the world.

The International Space Station Science Challenge may be completed individually or with a group. Individuals or groups will have approximately 3 months to put together your project. This challenge will be broken into three sessions. Session 1: September 2011 – November 2011 Session 2: December 2011 – February 2012 Session 3: March 2012 – May 2012 Students may: -Submit as many individual or group projects as can be completed during the time frame. -Participate in as many different groups as you would like. -Switch groups but only between sessions. -Participate in as many sessions as desired and may skip a session. No images of students may be included in the project.

Podcast/Video Podcast: Using a camcorder, digital audio recorder or computer, students can create a cool podcast/video podcast that clearly and accurately explains what the scientists are researching in their chosen ISS science experiment. They can record narration and any other scenes or interviews that they want to include. NASA’s Do-it-yourself Podcast is a great resource. Mix and mash the recording with downloaded NASA clips and edit the production. Most computers have software for editing video or audio. If not, they can search the Web for free or inexpensive editing software for Mac or PC. This project format should be fun and creative.

PowerPoint: Students can develop an informative and interesting PowerPoint that clearly and accurately explains what International Space Station scientists are researching in their chosen experiment. Again, these should be fun and creative.

Web Page: Students can create an exciting web page that clearly and accurately explains what the ISS scientists are researching in your chosen experiment. (NOTE: If submitting a web page, the sites will be reviewed using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, Safari 5.0, or Firefox 4.0. Please preview and test sites using each of these browsers).

Written Report: Students can write a clear and accurate report explaining in an easy-to-understand way what the ISS scientists are researching in the experiment.

NASA requires the following information be submitted for the ISS Science Challenge. Title of the Work Teacher/Educator Name Grade Level of the Student Group Submitting the Project School Name School Contact Mailing Address, , Phone & Number of Students in the class Participants’ first names only (will be published on NASA website) Deadline for all entries is TBD

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE WRITTEN IN ENGLISH. Any written report projects should be limited to no more than 5 pages in length in a Microsoft Word file converted to PDF format. Font size 12 point should be used. Any PowerPoint projects should be converted to PDF format.

Any Web Page projects should be saved to a folder and converted to a single.zip file (the default.html or index.html, or possibly a default.aspx or index.aspx file, should be located in the root of that folder). If submitting a web page, the sites will be reviewed using Internet Explorer 7 or 8, Safari 5.0, or Firefox 4.0. Preview and test sites using each of these browsers. Any podcast/video podcast should be limited to no more than 5 minutes in length.
