Scribes & Pharisees (20) For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:21-22 ESV (21) "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' (22) But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire.

Scribes & Pharisees Traditions of men  Used to negate God’s law  Matthew 15:1-9  Matthew 23:14, You have heard …, But I say unto you …  Matthew 5:21, 27, 33, 38, 43 (5 times)  Quotes traditions and attacks them, or …  Quotes scripture and attacks ‘tradition’ misapplications Luke 6:40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.  Do I reflect the character and nature of my teacher?

Righting the Abuse of Tradition It is not enough …  To not murder …  To not commit adultery …  To never strike a man …  To not act … wrongly It is only enough …  To never even wish to murder  To never even wish to commit adultery  To never even wish to strike a man  To have no desire to act wrongly

Not Oaths, But Truth Mt 5:33"Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, ' You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord. ‘”  Vow: a solemn promise, pledge, earnest declaration, or personal commitment  Oath: a statement or promise strengthened by such an appeal  Swear: to make a solemn declaration or affirmation by some sacred being or object, as a deity or the Bible.

Not Oaths, But Truth Lev 19:11 ' You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. 12 You shall not swear falsely by My name, so as to profane the name of your God; I am the Lord. Num 30:2 “If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”

Matthew 5: But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your statement be, 'Yes, yes' or 'No, no'; anything beyond these is of evil.
