Solar System Quiz Review PowerPoint -Please study your study guide as well as these questions on your planetary chart: 1. When was Mercury identified as a planet? 2. Describe the greenhouse effect that exists on Venus. 3. What sets Earth apart from other planets? 4. Describe the density of Saturn. 5. Describe Uranus’ tilt. 6. What color is Neptune?

What is a scale model?

A scale model is a two or three dimensional replica in which each element is shown in correct proportion. A scale factor involves reducing all measurements by the same amount in order to achieve the measurement of the scale model.

How was our scale model of the solar system similar to the actual solar system?

It is similar because: - the planets were in the correct order -their sizes were proportional. -the planets are in the same plane.

How was our scale model different?

It is different because: -the actual sizes and distances of the planets have been reduced by a scale factor. -the appearance of the model planets does not resemble the appearance of the planets. -the planets in the real solar system are not in a straight line.

What are terrestrial and gaseous planets?

Terrestrial planets are closest to the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars. They are small, rocky, with little or no atmosphere. The distances of the first four planets are relatively close to one another

Gaseous planets include: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune They are large gaseous bodies with small, rocky or metallic cores. The distances between these planets are much greater than with the first four planets.

What are impact craters?

-craters are the most widespread geological feature in the solar system. - they are large, bowl-shaped holes found in the solid, rocky surfaces of the terrestrial planets and their moons of gaseous planets.

How are impact craters formed?

They are formed when large meteoroids, asteroids, and comets smash into the surface of a planet, moon, or asteroid.

Why are their numerous craters on Mercury and on our Moon that are still in- tact?

Planets and moons that do not have water erosion, volcanism, or atmosphere have numerous craters still in tact.

Name the eight planets in order from the sun:

Describe their size and distance relationships:

- Jupiter is the biggest planet - Mercury is the smallest planet -Venus and Earth are similar sizes. - Neptune and Uranus are similar sizes. - Mars and Mercury are similar sizes.

How is Earth different from any other planet in our solar system?

- It has 7 continents -It has oceans -It has water ice caps on poles -It has clouds -It has one Moon -It has life

Which planets have rings?

The planets that have rings are: -Jupiter (rings are seen when there is light behind them), Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune

What causes Jupiter’s swirling cloud pattern?

Its rapid rotation
