Jack London is a great American writer. He was born on 12 January, 1876 in San Francisco, the USA. He started working for a living as his family was poor when he was a boy. One day a San Francisco paper advertised a writing contest. Jack’s mother made him write a story. She used to say that Jack had seen and done a lot, that he had always been an excellent storyteller. London wrote a story and it won the first prize, 25 dollars. His first book "The Son of the Wolf" (1900) gained a wide audience. During his short life London wrote about 40 books. The main theme of his books was the struggle of the individual to survive and achieve success. His most popular books are: "The God of His Fathers" (1901), "The Call of the Wild" (1903), "The Sea Wolf" (1904), "White Fang" (1906) and "Martin Eden" (1909). He died on 22 November, [1]

Together with his first wife Elizabeth Maddern he had two children - Joan and Bessie. But they divorced. (Later J. London married Charmian Kittredge.) [3] 1905
