Response Paragraph Guide Thesis: In Night, Elie Wiesel incorporates fine distinctions when describing himself and Moishe the Beadle to emphasize the differences between their crises of faith. Citations: “We spoke that way almost every evening, remaining in the synagogue long after all the faithful had gone, sitting in the semi- darkness where only a few half-burnt candles provided a flickering light.” (Wiesel 5) “Moishe was not the same. The joy in his eyes was gone. He no longer sang. He no longer mentioned either God or Kabbalah.” (Wiesel 7) “Why, but why would I bless Him? Every fiber in me rebelled… How could I say to Him: Blessed be Thou, Almighty, Master of the Universe, who chose us among all nations to be tortured day and night, to watch as our fathers, our mothers, our brothers end up in the furnaces?” (Wiesel 67)

Response Paragraph Guide What are the Three Cs? Context. Claim. Citation Chosen citation: “We spoke that way almost every evening, remaining in the synagogue long after all the faithful had gone, sitting in the semi-darkness where only a few half-burnt candles provided a flickering light.” (Wiesel 5) Example Sentences: Elie tells the reader that he and Moishe would “[speak about God and pray] almost every evening, remaining in the synagogue long after the faithful had gone” (Wiesel 5). Before the Nazis invaded Sighet, Elie recalls how he and Moishe would “[remain] in the synagogue long after the faithful had gone,” to discuss God and prayer “almost every evening.” (Wiesel 5) Moishe and Elie held similar religious convictions because “almost every evening” they would pray and talk in the “synagogue long after the faithful had gone, sitting in the semi-darkness where only a few half-burnt candles provided a flickering light” (Wiesel 5).
