 Boundless amounts of energy and curiosity  Willing to do almost anything  Self-Centered  Often blame others and do not like to be criticized  Mom is no longer the most important person  Sometime unpredictable Characteristics of a Kindergartner

 Take care of bathroom needs  Follow verbal directions  Fine motor skills (working with scissors, pencils, playdoh)  Work independently for short periods of time School Expectations

 Phonemic awareness skills (refer to handout)  Identify and produce rhyming words  Read first and last name  Recognize color words Reading

 Count to 10  Recognize numbers 1-5  Identify two dimensional shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, oval, rhombus  Represent numbers with fingers (1-10) Math

 Students who miss school show lower academic achievement than those with regular attendance.  Absences add up quickly.  Children who aren’t in school are more likely to get in trouble.  Avoid scheduling appointments during school. (8:50- 3:40)  Attendance patterns are set at a young age.  Letters are sent an 7, 14 and 20 days. After 20 days retention is considered by the school committee. Attendance
