9/28 Warm-up On a new warm-up page titled “Unit 2 Warm-ups:” a. Knowing all that you know about Anna’s case, what percent chance that she died from: homicide, suicide, natural causes, accident? Your total % should equal 100% b. What natural causes are most likely? (supported by data from the autopsy)

Today The Big Idea of Unit 2 Diagnosing Diabetes Lab -Did Anna Garcia have diabetes? If so, which type? How can we know? -Can you summarize the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes?

Turn and talk We know that we (and all life) are made of cells…. But what are cells made of?

You are what you eat!

Turn and talk: How are foods like Legos?

The Big Picture of Unit 2 Food IngestionDigestion AbsorptionCirculation Assimilation or Cell Respiration Elimination

Digestion: breakdown of large molecules into smaller units (by enzymes)

Absorption: villi (finger like cells) of small intestine absorb nutrients into bloodstream

Circulation: Blood carries nutrients to cells of the body

Assimilation: molecules move into cells: building blocks used to make new molecules (enzymes build new molecules)

Cellular Respiration Mitochondria (in cells) turns molecules into a form of energy cells can use (ATP)

The Big Idea: Metabolism refers to all the chemical reactions taking place

So.. We will focus on how all of this normally happens…. And possible problems

Diagnosing Diabetes 1)Pre-lab background info 2)Obtain the class set from the computer cart: Short reading about the Glucose Tolerance Test: Quick summary of how it works Check in! 1)Conducting the test on 3 patients (rinse the pipettes! No cross contamination!) 2)Insulin levels test on 3 patients 3)Patient Histories 4)Diagnose all 3 patients 5)Complete the conclusion questions

Normally…

Wrap-up (answer on your warm-up page) Check yo’self: Can you explain the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes? Which type does Anna Garcia have (and how do you know)?
