Lesson 55 The First Petition “Hallowed Be Your Name”

Exodus 34:5-7 5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.” WHAT WE CALL GOD

1 Samuel 3:7 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word. AND WHAT HE TELLS US ABOUT HIMSELF WHAT WE CALL GOD

Psalm 103:1 Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. IT MEANS THAT WE PRAISE HIM Isaiah 29:23 23 When they see among them their children, the work of my hands, they will keep my name holy; they will acknowledge the holiness of the Holy One of Jacob, and will stand in awe of the God of Israel. IT MEANS THAT WE KNOW AND HONOR HIM AS GOD

Jeremiah 23:28 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?” declares the LORD. BY TEACHING HIS WORD IN TRUTH AND PURITY

Malachi 1:6-8 6 “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the LORD Almighty. “It is you, O priests, who show contempt for my name. “But you ask, ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’ 7 “You place defiled food on my altar. “But you ask, ‘How have we defiled you?’ “By saying that the LORD’s table is contemptible. 8 When you bring blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice crippled or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the LORD Almighty. BY RESPECTING AND HONORING HIM WITH SINCERE WORSHIP

BY TEACHING HIS WORD IN TRUTH AND PURITY BY LIVING OUR LIVES TO GIVE GOD GLORY Matthew 5:14,16 14 “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Romans 2:23,24 23 You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” BY OBEYING HIS COMMANDMENTS

What was an Old Testament priest’s job? What kind of priests were Eli’s sons? How should they have honored God’s name? What is our duty as Christians toward God and neighbor? How should we honor (hallow) God’s name?
