ST. ALPHONSA A life of prayer saturated with suffering

Early Life Born as a premature baby in the 8 th month of pregnancy Annakutty was the childhood name of St. Alphonsa. Roughly translated it would mean ‘little Ann’. Mother died three months after her birth Annakutty was entrusted to the care of mother’s sister

Early Life The family played a key role in her faith formation through the prevalent practices of regular evening prayers, observance of weekly fastings and participation in the Eucharistic celebration Annakutty developed a personal devotion and love for Christ Jesus Christ began to become a concrete personal relational reality for her

Suffering From early in her life, Sister Alphonsa experienced great suffering She did not want to get married and chose to be a nun in life. She burnt her leg in live ash-pit to prove her wish to follow Christ (and to turn away suitors) At 17, she entered convent to become a nun and adopted the name Alphonsa At 21, she was affected with heavy bleeding Though she was appointed as a temporary teacher in a primary school she could not continue due to severe illness

Suffering She suffered from malaria and tuberculosis and ulcer A robber attacked her by night and left her bleeding and upset She suffered pain all life in bed and offered it to Jesus Christ Some doubted her piety She believed she was entrusted with a part of the cross of Christ Illness became a regular visitor of Sr.Alphonsa She was bedridden and was not able to walk Yet she prayed incessantly and was cheerful

Triumphant end of journey St. Alphonsa said, "I feel that the Lord has destined me to be an oblation, a sacrifice of suffering... I consider a day in which I have not suffered as a day lost to me". With this attitude of a victim for the love of the Lord, happy until the final moment and with a smile of innocence always on her lips, Sister Alphonsa quietly and joyfully brought her earthly journey to a close at an early age of 35

St. Alphonsa is usually noted for her acceptance and love of suffering and pain. She would even ask for it! What does this apparently ‘non- sensical’ yet theologically rich dimension of the spiritual life of St. Alphonsa reveal to us? The answer to this riddle is found in the centrality of Jesus Christ in her life and spirituality

Who is the central figure in your life?

Prayer of St. Alphonsa O Lord Jesus, hide me in the wound of your sacred heart. Free me from my desire to be loved and esteemed. Guard me from my evil attempts to win fame and honor. Make me humble till I become a small spark in the flame of love in your Sacred Heart. Grant me the grace to forget myself and all worldly things. Jesus, sweet beyond words, convert all worldly consolations into bitterness for me. O my Jesus, Sun of Justice, enlighten my intellect and mind with your sacred rays. Purify my heart, consume me with burning love for you, and make me one with you. Amen
