Definitions Genetic engineering - process of altering genes to combining DNA from two or more organisms. Genetic engineering - process of altering genes to combining DNA from two or more organisms. Recombinant DNA - product of genetic engineering. (contains at least two organisms’ DNA) Recombinant DNA - product of genetic engineering. (contains at least two organisms’ DNA)

Steps in Producing recombinant DNA: 1. Restriction enzymes are used to cut DNA into small pieces at specific locations. 2. Small DNA pieces are spliced with a sequence of bacterial DNA called a PLASMID. 3. The resulting plasmid is inserting into a bacteria cell. 4. The bacteria cell divides producing new copies of the recombinant human/bacteria DNA.

Human Genome Project Ongoing project to sequence all the base pairs in human DNA so we can determine what sections of DNA code for what traits.
