Servicemembers should have access to the same educational opportunities available to their civilian counterparts Educational programs should be provided by appropriately accredited colleges and universities Educational programs should be flexible in terms of scheduling, academic residency, course transfer, and acceptance of non-traditional credit SOC Consortium Principles

Serve active-duty servicemembers and their adult family members at the invitation of a Service Limit academic residency to 25% of degree (30% if degree is totally on-line) No final year/final semester requirement Accept American Council on Education (ACE) credit recommendations for military schools and occupational experience Participate in two-way guaranteed transfer of specific courses (applies to 90% of DNS members) Complete Student Agreements for military students DNS Member Institution Policy Commitments

Home College – The institution where a servicemember chooses to pursue a degree and graduate; this is the school that will issue the Student Agreement Network – The naming convention for academic degree programs within a specific subject area (i.e., Accounting, Computer Studies) Delivery Method – The format in which a degree is offered as selected by the services, including Traditional (in classroom/on location), Distance Learning (various formats), and Learning Assessment Course Category Code – The common numbering system used by SOC to categorize courses from multiple institutions (i.e., AC102B, CS121B) Transferability Tables (T-Tables) – The listings of course-to-course articulations listed by Course Category Code found in the DNS Handbook Handbook – The DNS Handbook published online, on CD-ROM or in print Key Terms
