WHS PBIS: PRIDE A pathway encouraging students to: Enter to learn, and leave to achieve.

What is PBIS? PBIS= Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports  PBIS assists schools in moving toward school-wide behavior systems that address the entire school – all students in all venues:  Classroom  Areas outside the classroom (hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, and playgrounds)  These systems define school rules and expectations, provide training about the rules, and offer feedback through acknowledgements and corrections.

PBIS IS ALL ABOUT THE POSITIVE!  PBIS is a systemwide behavior management system that rewards and encourages positive behaviors in order to deter from negative behaviors.  Positive reinforcement = provide rewards in response to a desired behavior.  Dog sits when told  dog gets a treat  Student helps another student who is struggling  student receives a reward  ***Rewards can be verbal or tangible

What’s the point?  At your tables, complete the chart while discussing the pros and cons of having a system wide behavior initiative that focuses solely on recognizing and rewarding positive behaviors.

Well then…what is PRIDE?  PRIDE is WHS’s implementation of PBIS!  We use PRIDE to set high expectations for student behavior throughout the school day.  PRIDE sets up a system of rules and expectations that all are expected to follow.

HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT THIS IN OUR SCHOOL? **We NEED your HELP!** PRIDE Coupons- Around the World: In groups, go to the wall and answer the following questions: 1.What types of small rewards could our students earn (i.e., in the classroom)? 2.What types of larger, schoolwide rewards could our students earn (e.g., school dance)? 3. When should you distribute PRIDE coupons?

How do you set these expectations for students?  One way to set high expectations from day one is to create and sign a class “Social Contract”.  Students and teachers create the rules for the classroom in accordance with PRIDE together.  Everyone agrees and signs. Teachers can use the contract as a reminder to students of the expectations and rules. (Students know what the rules should be and they expect them. This way they take ownership)

WHO is a part of PRIDE?  YOU.  AND YOU.  AND YOU!!!!  That’s right- everyone is a part of PRIDE and PRIDE is divided up into committees.

PRIDE Committees: 1. Competition 2. Communication 3. Positive Initiatives & Recognition 4. Mentoring and Tutoring 5. Data

Competition Committee  Coordinating quarterly and annual grade-level /school- wide competitions  School-wide competitions by grade-level  Could include (but not limited to):  GPA  Attendance Rate  PRIDE Coupons  Naviance usage  PRIDE events  Identify/develop class colors  Plan recognition assemblies  Plan individual recognition incentives (within the grade-level)  Plan individual Raffles (within the grade-level)

Communication Committee  Maintains communication throughout WHS and promotes PRIDE initiatives  Collaborate with administration to:  Develop/deliver morning announcements  Develop posters  Develop flyers for events  Identify ways to communicate with PTSA  Develop s/robo-calls as appropriate

Positive Initiatives & Recognition Committee  Organizes and facilitates PBIS events  Identifies, gather, and distribute rewards for PBIS initiatives  Identify days/events that were previously and/or currently promoted within WHS  Pink Out  Anti-Bullying Week  Fall (Athletic)  Organize/plan new events  Such as:  Day of Silence  International/Cultural Awareness Week  Spring (Testing)  Plan/organize Faculty Appreciation events and rewards  Organize/plan ways that PRIDE can connect with the School Store

Mentoring & Tutoring Committee  Coordinate peer and faculty tutoring and mentoring services.  Identify which mentoring programs have taken place (and currently exist) at WHS  WHS mentoring programs  External peer mentoring programs  Tutoring programs  Collaborate with Data Committee to identify mentorship and tutoring programs that should be developed in order to meet existing needs within WHS  Develop a running list of mentoring and tutoring programs that can be shared with staff (i.e., SST, administration, parents)

Data Committee  Develop and maintain data tracking systems.  Identify trends, student impact, and students in need of support.  Establish and maintain methods of tracking student data  PRIDE Coupons  GPA  Attendance  Naviance Usage  In collaboration with other committees, identify students in need of recognition and/or additional support

Remember: THINK POSITIVE!!  Focusing and rewarding the good is less stressful than always focusing on the negative.  Being positive can help us to weather the storm!  Recognizing and rewarding positive behavior will help deter negative behavior!
