Tech done right? Learning increases Done poorly, Learning – and scores - go down!

1:1 with Google Classroom: What Works What Doesn't’t You WANT 1:1 But what will you DO with it ???

1:1 Increases Time-On-Task Initial goal: just more minutes on homework daily AFTER class is BEST That’s over an extra hour weekly And THAT results in Improved Student Performance!

1:1 with Google Classroom: What Works What Doesn’t Successful 1:1 implementation STARTS with HOMEWORK ONLINE

But WHY Google Classroom?

Job skills are changing! So must K-12 (and Higher Ed) Content of this presentation is not guaranteed to be current, and may or may not apply to your particular situation- always verify, and check for most recent information.

Where the Jobs Are US News and World Reports

90% of jobs earning over $25,000 a year require use of technology

On the Job paper testing is a thing of the past

In the workplace: Employees receive assignments electronically Online Learning is replacing face-to-face training

Google Classroom Prepares Students with LIFE skills When you Post Homework Assignments online

HOMEWORK assignments

Assessments Taking online tests is important Now – and later

ASSESSMENT Classroom allows you to create & manage assessments 80% of item formats found on PARCC – Smarter Balanced / AIR – ACT - SAT

Link direct to any content anywhere !

Who did – and who did NOT submit work

Calendar students can understand!

Calendar PARENTS can understand!

Google Classroom – 2 hrs or less!

If your school is not already 1:1 already are online DAILY If your school is not already 1:1 Should YOU do this before 1:1 ? YES! % of elementary students % of high school students % of parents already are online DAILY

HOMEWORK - all in ONE location - JUST the Assignment to begin with As teachers and students learn…

HOMEWORK +  Assignments  A ‘hint’ motivates students  Reading reminders (specific pp./paragraph)  Content to help complete the assignments  Assessments that matter now – and LATER As teachers and students learn…

Assignments should include: - In-class and as part of homework Multiple Choice More than one correct answer Writing Read, then construct a response Charts and Graphs Questions based on viewing these

How to Start: Implement SEQUENTIALLY

What Works Guidelines: Limit tech use DURING class MAXIMUM recommended in-class 30 minutes daily K-2 45 minutes 3 – 4 60 minutes minutes & 12th – varies based on graduation path

What else do I need besides Google Classroom?

Student Tech Skills Checklist Keyboarding / Typing Speed Internet Safety Read and FOLLOW directions Take online tests Write Research Following Directions!

Communication: including use of language Appropriate for learning and career goals

Communication * : Appropriate for learning & career goals in WORDS using IMAGES with NUMBERS *credit to Ned Hill, Ohio State University for this conceptualization

If it’s prohibited face-to-face, its prohibited online Teachers must display ‘currently allowed’ uses No-use areas (locker rooms, office) identified Discipline guidelines clearly established / explained Classroom Management Policies

With a plan for keyboarding and typing skills

Keyboard Skills Include: Where are the letters & numbers ? More than just words $ ! + - Clicking on multiple correct answers Enter URL in a browser Using on-screen tools (like calculators & Camera)

Internet Safety

ACCOMMODATIONS for students with special needs: Does your online assessment support: Extended Time? Text-to-speech (headphones)? Test Readers? Other supports? The student’s plan take precedence over typical testing protocols, BUT accommodations usually can NOT apply to just ONE specific test. For example, if a student’s plan allows more time to complete ONLINE testing then more time must also be allowed for for ALL testing.

Tech must support homework  Limited tech use DURING class  Online testing builds LIFE skills  Communication AFTER content

Presenter’s interpretation of iNACOL model applied to online testing Is not intended to represent the position of iNACOL; iNACOL c iNACOL

It’s Time to begin 1:1 Learning with Google Classroom !

HOMEWORK - Additional Presentation Content available for YOUR district’s leadership team to consider Remember –Successful 1:1 implementation STARTS with HOMEWORK ONLINE

-  Explain WHY we are going 1:1 - Teachers (w/ homework LMS discussion) - Parents - Students - Community How to I begin?

Some Definitions: 1:1 Online  Internet device for every child  Internet at school and home  Teacher PD in online resources & blended learning strategies

Some Definitions: Learning Management System must support: Online Posting of Assignments Available to students – parents – and staff LMS also has: Assignment Calendar (‘due dates’) Assignment grades / teacher comments Readings, links to resources, quizzes, etc. A way to create / save / submit documents (e.g. ‘docs’)  Your LMS likely will NOT replace your current grade book 

Students receive a device – one of the LAST steps of 1:1 implementation !

Parent Access to Classroom Share assignment calendar with parents share-embed-your-google-classroom-calendars-with- parents/ share-embed-your-google-classroom-calendars-with- parents/ Additional Options:  Add Parent as student to class (‘muted’)  Provide Parent with Student log-in and password

Create your own self-grading Tests ! Google’s test-creation tool: ”Forms” Self-grading Tool: Flubaroo

It’s Time to begin YOUR 1:1 Learning
