New Faculty Orientation, 2016 Teaching at Carleton Peggy Hartwick School of Linguistics and Language Studies, FASS

New Carleton Faculty You

Teacher You

Concerned you Learning environment in which students can  Collaborate  Share learning objectives  Engage, participate & are motivated  Think critically  Achieve learning outcomes Learning environment in which you can  Provide enriching material  Cater to different learning styles  Align my research and teaching  Foster critical inquiry

Me  Instructor, School of Linguistics and Language Studies = 10+ years  ESLA 1300, 1500, 1900 = small  ALDS 1001 = smallish  ALDS 1001 online = medium  PhD student

Them - Student demographics  ESLA  Undergraduate ALDS

Learning in the 21 st Century Smooth learning spaces = freedom to move, explore, and create (Savin-Baden, 2008)

Teaching beliefs  What does it mean to be a good teacher?  What is my role as a teacher?  What is it like to be a student in my class?  Teaching is a privilege  Good teachers are learners too  Technology (cell-phones too) can support learning  Choices engage diverse learners

Teaching objectives  Build trust = responsible learners, confident learners, risk takers  Instil passion = motivate learners, interest learners, challenge learners  Arouse curiosity = active learners, engage learners  Incorporate technology = help learners master skills, create digitally competent & literate learners

Teaching Experiences  F2F  Blended  Fully Online  3D virtual learning environments  ePortfolios  Research-based  TED, EDC, CTESL, U.of Penn., MA, PhD.

Teaching contexts, spaces, tools  Classroom  Teacher observation  Spontaneous  cuLearn  Lessons  Chat/ forums  Contained chaos  3D environment  Interaction  ePortfolio  Process  Increase writing  Critical thinking  Digital literacy

cuLearn  Consistent  Lessons  Videos  Lectures  Live chat  Forum  Quizzes  Updates

cuLearn

Blended and online in cuLearn  Really liked the structure of the class. The emphasis was on learning rather than just regurgitating information and I would like to see this become the norm.  was quite afraid to take an online course, I thought I wouldn't be motivated enough, that I would procrastinate my work and so on. But sincerely, this course was well organized, interesting and even made me more autonomous and thorough towards my homework.

3DVLEs Affordances  Real-time interaction (voice, movement and text)  Authenticity/ fidelity of space  Tools (web, video, polling, collaborative tools)

3DVLEs

 I think this unit will help me to master my English because we have more speaking activity in 3D environment.  The most positive effect of this project is that it makes pupil come out of their comfort zone and makes them less shy.  In my experience, the most positive outcome of this learning process is group work.

ePortfolio  Critical  Creative  Connective  Reflective  Formative & summative

ePortfolio “I would not hesitate to incorporate the ePortfolio project…again. I feel that it was successful addition to my class not only because it piqued student's interests as a new platform to undertake their research project, but also because it provided students a chance to either incorporate already learned computer skills, or learn the required skills necessary to complete such a project, with the unexpected side effect of improving both theirs and my digital literacy.”

Challenges  Buy in  Time commitment  New technologies  Changing outcomes, criteria and practices  Perception of lack of teacher presence and sense of community (fully online courses)
