COMPONENTS OF SET-TOP BOX NETWORK INTERFACE DECODER BUFFER SYNCHRONIZATION HARDWARE

NETWORK INTERFACE User to receive data from the server and send data sever It allows the back to back network interface In a manner that it can be understood by the server.

DECODER (compressed). (uncompress among other things). This is part of what a modem does. The decoding process is Order to save storage space, disk bandwidth, and network bandwidth, movies are usually encoded Thus, the end-users need a decoder to decode before they are sent over the network The incoming stream's data before it's viewable This process sometimes demodulation or heavy lifting

BUFFER The network arrival time of a video stream cannot be determined exactly. This way if there are fluctuations in the transport time of the video stream to that receiver The stream is often received one or even a few seconds before it's actually seen by the end-user The viewer won't know the difference as their buffer has a bit of time to spare.

SYNCHRONIZATION HARDWARE

MULTIMEDIA The television interface to the Internet provides broad creative opportunities for web development. Sound and animation contribute a great deal to the creation of a more "television-like" experience for the user. The latest version of Web TV supports a wide spectrum of sound and animation, including: wav, aiff, au, MOD, MIDI and GSM, RealAudio 3.0, and Macromedia’s Flash 1.0

COMPNENTS Four primary components must be considered in broadcast design for the Web : The audience Screen size Color usage Mouse less navigation.

ADVANTAGES They do not need to understand PC technology to make Web TV work. Consumers do not need to spend more money on a computer. There is no complicated configuration, as there might be with modems, Netscape, other ISP's, etc. More comfortable environment--sofa, large screen, etc.

DISADVANTAGES Users cannot store files locally or download programs The service is basically text only. The only browser that can be used is Web TV's own Users cannot use word-processing or spreadsheet programs It does support IRC and HTML chats, but not Java- powered chats.

Conclusion The television interface to the Web offers much potential, especially to providers of goods and services. As Web TV's Crossover Links(TM) become more common, integrating television programming with web site content will greatly enhance the media experience for the viewing audience.
