Español 1A Lección 1 Agreement

Correct the following statements 1.I have two chair. 2.I have one books. 3.Those are mines. 4.These are her.

Did you notice the following gramatical errors? 1.I have two chairS. 2.I have one books. 3.Those are mines. 4.These are herS. In Spanish there are similar rules of grammar, we will refer to these as AGREEMENT rules in class.

Today We are going to learn about noun and article agreement using the definite article THE.

In Spanish the word THE appears four different ways depending on AGREEMENT. SingularPlural Masculine ElLos Feminine LaLas

The= El La Los Las

How do we know which one to use? When we learn vocabulary nouns, they are taught with the definite article. It is important to learn these with the words. Definite article = the = el, la, los, las

Gender and number of nouns The article also tells us the gender and number of the noun. In Spanish, each noun has a gender. It is either masculine or feminine. When writing and speaking, we always want to agree with gender and number.

You can see gender and number in the chart below:

El is used for singular and masculine words:

Ejemplos for singular and masculine: El cuaderno El carro El taco El burrito El diccionario *notice that these are singular because like in English, there is no S at the end to make them plural. *notice also that these all end in –O, which is true for masculine, singular nouns.

Los is used for plural and masculine words:

Ejemplos for plural and masculine: Los cuadernos Los carros Los tacos Los burritos Los libros *notice that these are plural because like in English, there is an S at the end to make them plural. *notice also that these all end in –OS, which is true for masculine, plural nouns.

Singular or Plural?  El libro  El taco  Los burritos  El diccionario  Los carros

La is used with singular and feminine words:

Ejemplos for singular and feminine: La quesadilla La tortilla La playa La escuela La computadora *notice that these are singular because like in English, there is no S at the end to make them plural. *notice also that these all end in –A, which is true for feminine, singular nouns.

Las is used with plural and feminine words:

Ejemplos for plural and feminine: Las quesadillas Las tortillas Las playas Las escuelas Las computadoras *notice that these are plural because like in English, there is an S at the end to make them plural. *notice also that these all end in –AS, which is true for feminine, plural nouns.

Singular or Plural?  Las personas  La mochila  La cosa  Las profesoras

En resumen: You can see gender and number in the chart below:
