In English, these expressions are used to compare two people or things Ex. The girl is more short than the boy. They are formed in English by adding –er to the end of the word or by using more, less or as Adjectives compare qualities (ex. Tall, fast) Nouns compare quantities (ex. Money, opinions)

In Spanish, these comparatives work like a formula. The words more, less, and as are used For comparing qualities and quantities, the formula goes… More/less + noun/adjective + than or As + noun/adjective + As

More… than Más… que Less… than Menos… que

We use different words for as for nouns and adjectives As… as (adjectives) Tan… como As… as (nouns) Tanto(s)… como Note: When using this comparison, the tanto must agree in number in gender with the noun. So, when comparing shoes (zapatos), use tantos

We can also use comparisons without qualities or quanities (this does not use the formula) More than Más que Less than Menos que As much as Tanto que

The formula for these comparisons is… verb + comparative word + que Older than Mayor que Younger than Menor que Better than Mejor que Worse than Peor que

She is more intelligent than I. Ella es más inteligente que yo. I have less dresses than my sister. Tengo menos vestidos que mi hermana. He is as tall as Pedro. Él es tan alto como Pedro. You have as much money as I. Tú tienes tanto dinero como yo.

I like to play soccer more than study. Me gusta jugar fútbol más que estudiar. She eats fruits less than vegetables. Ella come frutas menos que legumbres. I talk as much as you. Yo hablo tanto que tú.

My friends are older than I. Mis amigos son mayor que yo. My sister is younger than I. Mi hermana es menor que yo. The girl sings better than the boy. La chica canta mejor que el chico. They play basketball worse than us. Ellos juegan baloncesto peor que nosotros.
