Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 By: Blake Burch

This act was enacted by the 93 rd United States Congress in 1974 and signed into law by Gerald Ford. It was amended in 1996 to enhance small water supply system flexibility, community water protection, and public water education. Authorization of Act

A few Main Points of the 1996 Amendments Consumer Confidence Reports: All community water systems must prepare and distribute annual reports about the water they provide, including information on detected contaminants, possible health effects, and the water's source. Cost Benefit Analysis: US EPA must conduct a thorough cost-benefit analysis for every new standard to determine whether the benefits of a drinking water standard justify the costs. Drinking Water State Revolving Fund: States can use this fund to help water systems make infrastructure or management improvements, or to help systems assess and protect their source water.

The SDWA is funded by the federal government. It has provided more than $8 billion to local water systems to maintain public health protection. The SDWA is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and it’s local state partners. Funding

The SDWA ensures that public water systems meet national standards that protect the people from harmful effects of possible contaminants in the water. For each contaminant requiring regulation, the EPA sets a legal limit on how many are allowed in a single drinking water source. One of the original provisions of the SDWA was a regulatory program to protect underground sources of drinking water from injection well fluids. Reasons for Creation
