No evidence for damage (broken wires 43/43 or gasleaks 5/43) during transport up to now. By end of June all 47 chambers of type 1440 and 1680 will have been shipped with the exception of BOL92 (hit by fallen object from LHCb frame and has some non-working tubes) which will stay at NIKHEF as 1 of 4 (BOL3,4,5,92) working spares Shipment to CERN: large truck with 8 chambers every 3 weeks. 37 BOL-MDT’s are now in hall 887 at CERN. Lower as needed/agreed due to “panic elsewhere”. At the very minimum should keep temporary (Wo)manpower up to end Status NOW (may 2005)

We found broken wires: - Equipping the chambers with gas (2001/2002). Typically broken at 19 mm from end (BOL1-10) - In cosmic ray station (powercut 2002, gashandling 2004) - In chambers that were OK in the Hal oct 2004 but not anymore in the EMINhal nov After connecting 2 multilayers directly (Mahal 2005). Broken at cm from end. - Spontaneously during stable operating condition in cosmic-ray station (BOL51) Developed and made operational method to replace broken wires consisting of the following steps: Broken wires

I Heating the brass A modified solder iron heats the brass in the endplug such that the noryl just becomes soft around the brass insert which can then be pulled out.The tube is under slight overpressure so dirt keeps out

II Extracting the insert Slowly the brass insert is pulled out

The brass insert is out of the endplug III Brass insert is out

IV Screw threat and new wire The old wire is removed, screw threat made and a new wire is pulled using gasflow or double sided sticky tape

V Wire crimp opposite site The wire is crimped first on the other endplug

VI Crimping the new wire The wire tension is applied and the new wire is crimped

Summary of broken wire repair A method to replace wires in MDT tubes has been developed at NIKHEF by Rene de Boer, Edward Berbee and myself A method to replace wires in MDT tubes has been developed at NIKHEF by Rene de Boer, Edward Berbee and myself Method tried on about close to 20 chambers. For 1 chamber up to 2-10 wires/day can be replaced Method tried on about close to 20 chambers. For 1 chamber up to 2-10 wires/day can be replaced These chambers behave like the others during operation in cosmic ray station at NIKHEF. These chambers behave like the others during operation in cosmic ray station at NIKHEF. Precision: First analysis BOL78 (see Pieter’s talk) shows the rms of 10 replaced wires is like the rms of all wires. From this one tends to conclude the precision is better then 20 micron. BOL78 has been measured in the X-ray tomograph last week Precision: First analysis BOL78 (see Pieter’s talk) shows the rms of 10 replaced wires is like the rms of all wires. Cosmic Ray Station at NIKHEF Testbed for BOL-mdt’s, RASNIK, DCS and MROD (including later modifications) Stable datataking from 04/04-10/04 with X-ray tomograph measured chambers to set up the procedures Routine certification of set’s of 3 BOL-mdt’s sandwiched non- kinematically between 2 X-ray tomograph measured chambers measuring: T0,Tmax,efficiency,wire-resolution, (wire-position, geometry will come later) (see Pieter’s talk) during oct 2004 till oct 2005 Long term operation of two chambers (BOL8, BOL2)  Study T0,R- t,Temp, etc effects After certification of the 96 NIKHEF BOL-mdt’s the station will be filled with 4 “active spares” (BOL3,4,5,92) and maybe BOL0 (kinematically mounted?) with twin-tube HV hedgehog boards so that full two-dimensional tracking can be studied.

Status –some numbers Some (round) numbers: 93% leaktested (in EMIN hal at NIKHEF) 93% “Mecca” tested (i.e. connections tested), sometimes up to 3 times 90% projective platforms glued (finish june) 53% tested with cosmics (see Pieters talk) 43% shipped to CERN All broken wires being repaired Search for other non-functional tubes (~10?), electronic channels started All cc platforms glued by june 0% long term leak tested 5% leaktested OK in BB5 0% BOL stations tested in BB5 0% installed in ATLAS

Work in BB5 Install CSM-4 (if needed) + pretest. Measure pressuredrop versus time and noise-rate. Measure platforms, install praxial systems and rotate chamber to final position. Repairs and cleanups. Install Common Support and adjust to measured rail-positions (if neede) Merge with BOL-RPC to form BOLstation Cosmicray test BOLstation Above implies lot’s of Chamber handling Sag compensation I would like to do just after station arrives in final position at point 1.

Rough Schedule BB5 Finish BMS (Dubna) and BML(Frascati), which have RPC’s on both sides by summer Start BOS (MPI) in July Start BOL (NIKHEF) in September Schedule depends critically on BOL RPC- planes delivery and will go on till end 2005/beginning Manpower: 1-2 MA, 1PhD, 1Senior This manpower will also (sometimes) work at SX1 depending on actual schedule

Work at Point1 Reception BOLstations at Point1 Installation in rotator and rails (slider) Adjust Sagcompensation Installation projective and ccc systems Connection cables and gas Commissioning single chamber immediately after installation Make RASNIK operational Make DCS operational Make MROD operational (see Jos’s talk) Manpower: From BB5 +(experts, 2CT, +shifts)

Conclusion/Expected Status End 2005 Several month’s of experience with Cosmic-ray datataking with BML,BOL stations in sector #13. Should expand as soon as possible to get “long tracks” Majority of Barrel MDT’s and services installed in ATLAS. All NIKHEF MDT’s at CERN (apart from “active spares” in cosmic-ray station with full 2-D readout)
