Computer and Digital Technologies in the Classrooms Chapter 3-4 TLT

How Does Computer Work? The Computer and all its components make up a computer system The Computer System

How Does Computer Work? Steps of taking data in, processing the data, storing them as necessary, and outputting the result is called the computing cycle The Computing Cycle InputCPU Storage Memory Output

How Does Computer Work? Memory – RAM (Random Access Memory) is computer system’s temporary memory area. The Computing Cycle InputCPU Storage Memory Output

Computer Startup Process ROM (Read-only-memory) POST – Power on self test Operating System – Program that runs the computer and provides an interface (Ex: Windows, Red Hat or Macintosh) Power ON Read Data from ROM Run post Everything O.K? Load Operating System Output error message

Popular Microcomputer Software Operating System – provides the interface for the user and controls the computer operations Word Processing – gives the user an environment for entering text and other data and manipulating its format prior to printing out Electronic Spreadsheets – manipulate, format, and calculated numerical data and arrange them in a display called a worksheet Database Management – provides environment in which large quantities of data can be entered, stored, manipulated, queried, and reported Presentation Software – enables the user to create electronic slide shows.

Popular Microcomputer Software Desktop Publishing – Publishing software for easy- to-use layout and design of complex formats Graphics Programs – User can draw pictures, create diagrams, or manipulate digital images Communication Software – Connect a computer to one or more other computers via phone lines and the browsers that let users examine the sites on the world wide web Utilities – include all of the various types of software that helps users maintain their computers in good working order

Input Devices Includes any computer peripheral that you might use to enter data into the computer’s memory

Output Devices Pieces of hardware that move information (data that have been processed) out of the computer

Storage Can be viewed as acting in the capacity of both input and output hardware

Central Processing unit “Brains” of the computer. Within the CPU, calculations are performed; the flow of information between input, output, and memory is coordinated

Other input devices helpful to teachers and learners

Other output devices helpful to teachers and learners

Rising Technology Wireless Devices Palmtop Computers E-Book and Tablet PCs Voice Activated Devices

Virtual Environment Virtual reality is a combination of hardware and software that together create a digital environment with which you can interact
