Satire: “Advice to Youth” Mark Twain

“Advice to Youth” Questions Determine what Twain is mocking in our society. Cite and explain 3 instances of satire and how he uses rhetorical strategies . Analyze how the language in the passage serves Twain’s satiric purpose, considering diction, hyperbole, irony, juxtaposition, and tone in your analysis. What satirical directives are being used towards Twain’s purpose? What is Twain’s intended effect on the audience?

Homework: Due Friday Write your own advice to youth satire. In your introduction, address your audience: incoming freshman, general youth, etc. Determine your purpose. What point are you trying to make? Use at least 3 different examples in three different paragraphs. Your conclusion should be where you really state the point you’re trying to make.
