HAPTIC TECHNOLOGY : ( The touchy Feely Side Of Telecom ) Presented by Rosalin Panda Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Institute of Technical Education and Research, Bhubaneswar

Talk Flow : 1.Introduction 2. Why touch ? 3. Touch:fundamental aspect of inter personal communication 4. Haptic communication between humans & Robots. 5. Other applications. 6. Disadvantages. 7. Future work. 8. Conclusion

INTRODUCTION : Haptic from the Greek word “HAPHE” means pertaining to the sense of “touch”. Haptic Technology : Technology which interface the user via the sense of “Touch”. Aim of this technology is to create a physical link between the people separated by distance.

WHY TOUCH ?  Natural  Fast  Good for building up mental pictures of 3d objects.  Sensation of touch is the brain’s most effective learning mechanism.

TOUCH is the fundamental aspect of inter personal communication To express emotions. Idea behind inTouch.

FIELDS OF APPLICATIONS 1. Medical robotics a) Laboratory Robots. b)Tele surgery. c)Tele medicine. Laboratory robots: For pre-programmed task. If high repetitions. Perform multiple task in parallel.

Requirements : I. Robots should have intelligence. II. Use audio signal to control Robotic Arms. III. Patients should be assured. IV. Can’t be pre-programmed

2. Distance education Reduce the restriction of number of subjects that can be taught over Internet. Students can practice in a risk free environment. Subjects can be taught which require hands-on experience.

Haptic phones: Human Computer sight sound Touch Just like graphics and sound, touch can be coded as digital bits and sent in packets over the internet or a cell phone network, then reassembled some form on the receiving device. Games, music, videos application will be enhanced with tactile rhythms.

Haptic communication between Humans & robots Communication robots + tactile sensors over its entire body = human (same capability of haptic inter action) Telemetric robot skin: 3 layers. a.Outside--thin silicone rubber(5 mm) b.Middle---thick silicone rubber(10 mm) c.Inner----urethane foam

Tactile sensor elements are piezoelectric polymer inserted between the two silicone layers. ARCHITECTURE

Other Applications of Haptic technology In atomic force microscope. In data visualization. Advertising and commerce. Entertainment. Artwork.

Disadvantage Haptic sensors are costly and needs more attentation during implementation. Not so develope in case of Thermal haptic communication. Need constant verification in case of telesurgery. Difficult to implement the haptic interface

FUTURE WORK Future work will concentrate on user testing and further refinement of the haptic designs. The electronics version of inTouch is also currently under development and will require investigation into control algorithms to achieve the desired feel.

Conclusion This paper has presented the philosophy and application of haptic technology or inTouch system. The inTouch system provides a physical link between people separated by distance, unattainable with current inter personal communication technology.

THANK YOU.
