Situation and Design Brief Situation: The government of Jakarta has asked a local construction company to build a bridge than will span a small river in East Java. This bridge will need to support cars, lorries and pedestrians and it will shorten the traveling time between the two villages on opposite sides of the river. They have commissioned 5 teams of engineers to design a scale model that will then be made full size. These teams will be competing for the contract and the strongest design will win the design contract. Design Brief Working in teams of 4 or 5, design and make a model bridge using only: Balsa wood 3mm x 3mm (square section) 60cm lengths Wooden skewers (x 50 per group) Balsa Wood for decking (90cm x 8cm x 2mm) x 2 Celloptape String The bridge should be no more than 10cm wide, 50 cm long and 60cm high. Some parts of the bridge can hang below the road surface level, but cannot be fixed to the sides You do not have to use all of the material provided. The winning design will be the strongest bridge. Note : There is no restriction on your actual design, but it should incorporate the best features of truss/beam, suspension, arched and cantilever bridges that you have researched.

Specifications Your bridge should : be as strong as possible be as light as possible be as rigid as possible be no more than 10cm wide be no more than 60 cm long be no more than 70cm high incorporate drinking straws in some part of the construction be based on your own original design (decided as a team) be finished to a high quality
