How the Domain Name System has impacted Internet history. Fig 1: The structure of the DNS name space

Introduction This presentation will be about: the size of the DNS, components that are the most important for DNS operations and how are they related to each other, function of the DNS, if the operation of the DNS is affected by any legislation in the UK, the most significant limitations to the continued operation of the DNS.

Who founded DNS and when? At the request of Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris invented the Domain Name System in 1983 and wrote the first implementation. Jon PostelPaul Mockapetris Dr. Paul V. Mockapetris Inventor of the Domain Name System (DNS) Jon Postel

The size of the Domain Name System The size of the DNS is unlimited. It was estimated that the Internet was doubling in size every ten to twelve months and traffic was doubling every 100 days (for 1000% annual growth).

Which 3 components are the most important for DNS operations and how are they related to each other? Name server- The domain name system database is divided into sections called zones. The name servers in their respective zones are responsible for answering queries for their zones. A zone is a subtree of DNS and is administered separately. Resolver- The resolver will send requests to the name servers to return information requested by the user. The requesting computer tries to connect to the name server using its IP address rather than the name. IP address- Every device connected to the public Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods (also called a 'dotted-quad') and look something like This website provides you with your own IP address. In my case I got an IP address of This is the IP address for Virgin Media in the city of Waterlooville which is in Hampshire.

Function of the Domain Name System There are many functions to the DNS, below are some examples of the function of the DNS: Domain Name Service (DNS) is the service used to convert human readable names of hosts to IP addresses. The Domain Name System also stores other types of information, such as the list of mail servers. The Domain Name System also specifies the technical functionality of this database service.

Is the operation of the Domain Name System affected by any legislation in the UK? Clip Art Interestingly, and importantly, most of the disputes to date have been in relation to the ".com" top level domain name. Reasons for this are: one of the oldest attractive to a commercial entity seeking to set up a web site

What is the most significant limitation to the continued operation of the Domain Name System? Security is very important. In the case of the DNS it's probably the most significant limitation to the continued operation of the DNS. the expansion of the Internet into the commercial sector in the 1990s changed the requirements for security measures to protect data integrity and user authentication. Several vulnerability issues were discovered and exploited by malicious users. One such issue is DNS cache poisoning.

Thank you for listening to my presentation.
