OCCAM’S READER: WHY DO WE WISH TO SHARE E-BOOKS? Cen Cheng, Michigan State University, 6/10/16

Table of Contents  Implementation Timeline at MSU  Workflows In and Outside of ILLiad  License Review: the Side Project  Statistical Review  Future Directions

Implementation Timeline at MSU Summer 15 Info gathering Communication with the IT unit Demonstration to all library staff Fall 15 Sandbox testing within the unit Spring 16 Pilot period started and will last for a full year

Workflows In and Outside of ILLiad  Occam’s Reader (OR) provides an online interface and can operate entirely on itself:

Borrowing Workflows Outside of ILLiad

Borrowing Workflows in ILLiad  This is possible via the optional ILLiad addon developed by OR.

Borrowing Workflows in ILLiad

Lending Workflows Outside of ILLiad  Updates to the OR requests are notified via s, for both Borrowing and Lending.  When you receive a new Lending request, you will be notified via .  The Lending function of OR is entirely out of ILLiad.

Lending Workflows Outside of ILLiad

 When ready to fill a OR request:  Save the PDF of the e-Book locally  Activate the OR image conversion software to convert the file  ‘Process’ the OR request in the system to upload the file and to notify the borrowing library

What a Successful OR Loan Looks Like  Access key shared with borrowing library and patron  14-day loan period  Access provided online and accessible everywhere  OR viewer provides many features such as: Color Zooming function Thumbnail function  OR viewer presents some limitations: No copying, printing, downloading or searching (no OCR)

License Review: the Side Project  Licensing review is necessary to determine if an e- Book can be loaned.  MSU developed a workflow to scan licenses when requests come up.  New ERM records are created for different packages to code varied ILL terms.

Statistical Review  MSU Borrowing (since 1/1/2016):  15 unfilled out of 15 requests  MSU Lending (since 1/1/2016):  72 rejected out of 72 requests

Statistical Review  System wide stats per OR (since 1/1/2016):  A total of 148 requests  41 completed (28%)  23 canceled by borrower  72 unfilled  12 in process

Future Directions  Licensing work is the foundation of any and all interlibrary loan for e-Books.  OR is planning on more system enhancements in the future including a discovery layer.  It takes collective efforts to change the landscape of e-Book sharing.
