BUILDING AN ABSOLUTE MONARCHY  Absolute monarchy or absolutism meant that the sovereign power or ultimate authority in the state rested in the hands of a king who claimed to rule by divine right.  sovereign power consisted of the authority to make laws, tax, administer justice, control the state's administrative system, and determine foreign policy.  These powers made a ruler sovereign.

LOUIS XIV  Set the trend for Absolute Monarchy  Known as the Sun King  "L'Etat, c'est moi" or "I am the state."  His reign of 72 years and 110 days is the longest of any monarch of a major country in European history.

VERSAILLES

DISPLAY OF POWER  Versailles has been a great tool in promoting our King, Louis XIV  The Palace of Versailles is a true reflection of the absolute power that King Louis XIV’s reign  Versailles also helped King Louis take control of the nobility by providing enough space to keep nobles and under his consent watch.  The sheer size of the palace sends a message that he has matchless wealth and displays his power as an absolute monarch
