Health Information Certificate Certificate Requirements Students must take 3 CORE classes and 1 or more electives for completion of the certificate. Core classes: – LIS 4785 Health Informatics (3 credits) – LIS 4776 Advanced Health Informatics (3 credits) – LIS 4940 Internship (3 credits) Electives: – LIS 4772 Intro to Consumer Health Informatics (3 credits) OR IFS 3037 Empowering Health Consumers in the eHealth Era (3 credits) – NUR 3076 Communication in Healthcare (3 credits)

Core Courses LIS 4785 Introduction to Health Informatics – This course presents how theory and practice in healthcare, strategy, information technology, communications, and law are integrated in the management and delivery of health care in various situations. – The course focuses on the emerging specialization in the health- care industry that combines expertise in health care, information technology, and information management. LIS 4776 Advanced Health Informatics – Prerequisite: LIS This course builds and extends the foundations presented in LIS 4785, while introducing practical solutions for the health IT professional. – Students apply IT knowledge to address real-life problems in the medical community. The course provides students with a solid practical set of skills to enter the health industry.

Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) The degree provides expertise in information technology, individual and organizational behavior, and information management targeted to developing the IT skills needed to work effectively within information provision environments. – Information architecture, information quality assurance, usability, IT governance, information systems management, IT project management, user experience design, IT documentation/technical writing and communication, distributed information systems, data management, and mobile information systems.

Course Website Canvas Instructure All of the course materials will be available from the course site. – Lecture notes will be available prior to the class, but will be half-empty. You need to take your notes during class for your study. Canvas profile update is important! (This is one of the class activities this week) You can send messages via Canvas.

Course Materials No textbook is required. Readings will be assigned each week. Readings are from many different resources; books, news articles, government websites, etc. All of the readings will be available from Course Canvas. The PDF copies of the book chapters are usable for the purposes of course work only. They should not be distributed to the third parties.

Show and Tell: Health Informatics News Article Review Sign-up for the date they want to present. – We will have our first show and tell on September 3 rd. Post a URL of the article to Google Drive LIS 4785 Show and Tell a day before your presentation.Google Drive LIS 4785 Show and Tell Select a news article. Review the news article “prior to” the presentation. – What is the news article about? How is the news article related to the class weekly topic? – What is a problem or an issue, presented in the news article? – How has the problem or the issue been solved in the news article? – What are your thoughts and opinions on the problem or the issue? Prepare two questions to class. Present your article in 3 minutes and have a Q&A session, briefly. Submit a short report on article to Canvas by a day after presentation.

Wiki Term Posting (10%) Choose THREE (3) health informatics terms this semester. Two existing terms from the wiki and one new term must be completed. Post the information to the following wiki: You need to request a membership to the wikispace by September 3 rd.

Final Group Project (25%) There are many problems and potential solutions related to health informatics. You work as a group in order to solve the issues using existing technology or by creating new solutions. Form a group with 3 or 4 students. Select project topic/problem. Submit a 2 page project outline (problem statement, evidence, potential solutions). Develop solution application prototypes and show a demo of a template of the application. Present the project overview and outputs. Submit a project report. Individual grades for the team assignment will then be weighted.

Class Activities (10%) There will be class activities during almost every class session. Individual or group exercises and discussion, etc. Students will receive 5 points per each activity through their participation (0 points for being late or not submitting). No make-up will be available for any class activities, but students can be waived for missing activities up to 3 times during the semester.

Quizzes (10%) Students will have short quizzes every Tuesdays on the terms and concepts pertaining to health informatics, those which have been taught and discussed during class, in readings, and in lecture notes, as well.

Grading Scale A : Exceptional A- : Very good B+, B, B-: Above average C+, C, C-: Average adequate, satisfactory, fair D+, D, D-: Below average, marginal, poor F: Failing, unsatisfactory No INC. grades will be given for this course except under legitimate extenuating circumstances and only if the student requesting the incomplete has: attended at least 50% of the class meetings, has completed at least 60% of the main class assignments, and can present valid medical documentation for his/her inability to comply with the course requirements.

Class Courtesy Complete any assigned readings before class and be prepared to contribute to group and class discussions. Show respect for your classmates and for me, and to assist in the establishment and maintenance of a positive learning environment. Turn off your cell phones and other electronic communication devices before class. Laptop usage is necessary in some discussions but will be monitored.

Class Attendance Consult with the instructor regarding your issues prior to the class meeting dates. No make-up will be available for any class activities, but students can be waived for missing activities up to 3 times during the semester. Failure to attend less than 50% of course sessions will result 'F' in the course grade. Attendance during presentation days is mandatory with the exception of a valid and documented medical excuse. Failure to attend presentation days will result in an automatic 1% deduction in the final grade

Late Submission Course assignments are typically due by 11:59 p.m. on the due dates indicated in the Course Calendar (unless otherwise stated). 10% percentage-points will be deducted for every day you are late with an assignment or project. Assignments submitted two days after the deadline will not be graded.
