What is multiple assessment?

What is Multiple Assessment? summativeassessment Multiple assessment can refer to: formativeassessment

Formative Assessment FormativeAssessment Formative Assessment Assessment Terms “Informal assessment, usually refers to classroom assessment carried out during the course of teaching and learning process.” (Mckay, 2006: p.20) taking place during different instructional process or cycle

Summative Assessment Assessment Terms taking place at the end of the instructional process or cycle. Summative Assessment “Formal assessment usually refers to assessment that is planned and carried out following formal procedure.” (Mckay, 2006: p.20)

Assessment Tools  teacher observation  teacher-designed tasks and tests  work samples, portfolios and projects  curriculum profiles  diagnostic tests  standardized tests

Why do we need multiple assessment?

Washback Effect Testing has been known to have very negative washback effects. Testing can cause learners to be disinterested in the learning process. Testing does not often have a direct relationship to the language that learners find to be meaningful.

it’s better to look for alternative assessments in general and for innovative approaches to assessing language skills in particular. In order to develop students’ ability to communicate and use language socially, Discussion of testing

Features of Alternative Assessment  Assessment is based on authentic tasks that demonstrate learners' ability to accomplish communication goals.  Instructor and learners focus on communication, not on right and wrong answers.  Learners help to set the criteria for successful completion of communication tasks.  Learners have opportunities to assess themselves and their peers. Cited on from

Alternative Assessments  designed and structured differently from traditional tests  scored and graded differently  Use activities  performance based  language learning is communication for meaningful purposes.

Multiple Assessment Multiple Assessment can refer to observations, portfolios, self assessment, peer assessment, games, worksheets, comments from parents, etc.

Why do we need to integrate assessment into learning activities?

Need for Integrated Assessment It reflects the spirit of recommended ELT practices. It can promote positive washback. It can be adapted to a wide variety of assessment purposes. Multiple measures over time in appropriate setting provide a more accurate picture of student ability. Assessment needs to be integrated into all phases of instruction.

How to integrate assessment into learning activities?

Integrating Assessment into Oral Activities  Pair work: (worksheet) Listen, Draw & Write It  Assessment tool: Peer Assessment Sheet

 Teamwork performance can be assessed.  Adopt numeric scoring criteria for assessment rubrics so as to report students’ oral performance.  Students should be aware of evaluation criteria ahead of the time so they will understand what they are being asked to do and why, and will care about reaching goals.
