Monocots vs. Dicots Monocot seeds include grasses, such as corn and rye, and grains such as wheat and rice. A monocot seed contains one cotyledon, or seed.

Exploring Creation with Botany Lesson Two Review

About Seeds Inside every seed is a dormant baby plant. Dormant means the baby plant is sleeping. The baby plant is called an embryo. When it begins to grow, the new plant is called a seedling.

What does a seed need to wake up? Warmth Water Air

What is the Testas? The shell on the outside of a seed is the testa. The testa protects the embryo like a coat. The testa comes off when the seed becomes warm and wet. The belly button of the seed, where it was once attached to the plant, is called the hilum.

What is Inside a Seed? Cotyledons provide food the embryo as the seed begins to grow into a plant. Endosperm is the food absorbed by the cotyledons to help the embryo grow. The radicle is the embryo’s root which becomes the root for the plant. The hypocotyl grows and searches for light. It is the stem for the plant. The epicotyl is the top of the embryo, from which the plumule sprouts and becomes leaves.

What is Germination? Germination is when water loosens the testa and the embryo begins to wake up and grow.

Two different kinds of angiosperms. MonocotsDicots Flower petals in multiples of three Veins run straight up and down One cotyledon in the seed Veins branch outwards from the midrib Two cotyledons in the seed Flower petals in multiples of four or five
