Quaker Colony  Penn was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers)  Wanted colony b/c Quakers were being persecuted in England for refusing to fight in wars and rejection of traditional religion  Named for “Penn’s Woods”  Colony based on religious freedom, tolerance, independence

Walking Purchase  William Penn always had a friendly relationship with the Natives of PA  When Penn died, his sons took control of the colony  Sons were not so friendly  Penn brothers wanted more land from Natives  Supposedly, Penn signed a deed years earlier that said the Natives would sale land “as far north as a person could walk in a day and a half”
