EXAM REVIEW

Number of Colonies? 13 Name of Regions? New England Middle Colonies Southern Colonies Main Economic Activity in each region? New England- fishing, manufactured goods Middle- trade, farming, iron work Southern- tobacco

King Philips War Began because of colonists desire to settle into new land for agricultural purposes (Natives already lived there) Natives attacked and destroyed several English towns and their agriculture in hopes to drive the English out of the New England region. This was not successful and the English won Significance The English took complete control of the New England region and left the tribal Native American life virtually extinct

Role of Governor Appointed by the King to govern a specific colony. They often set laws/rules based on colonists payment to the Governor. At times these laws/rules would go against the King of England. This was clearly seen in the Georgia Colony Consequences Colonists were able to get a taste of self-government… Road to Independence?

Role of Men White men owned majority of land therefore having the most wealth and power Significance of slavery in the South It increased southern population It provided free labor for Southern plantations.

Why did England leave the colonies alone? -Governing them was too difficult because of the distance -Civil war in England -Colonists were loyal to their Mother Country -England got what it wanted from its colonies- raw materials and a place to sell its goods.-by leaving them alone

Mercantilism held that a country should try to get and keep as much gold or silver as possible. The more gold and silver country had, argued mercantilists, the wealthier and more powerful it would be Salutary Neglect economically beneficial for Britain to neglect the colonists than to have strict enforcement.

Navigation Acts French Indian War Treaty of 1763 Proclamation of 1763 Sugar Act Stamp Act Townshend Act (Boston Massacre) Tea Act (Boston Tea Party) Intolerable Act (First Continental Congress)

Lexington and Concord First two battles of the American Revolution Location: Outside Boston What was British goal? To destroy supplies and seize Hancock and Adams Who Won? Patriots aka colonists aka Americans What is the significance of this war? Started the war and allowed for Great Britain to realize the Americans were serious about seeking independence.

Bunker Hill Location: Boston Who won? British Significance? This battle had a lot of British causalities in comparison to the Patriots. Even though a loss, the Patriots become spirited with the idea they dented the British military.

Quebec Location: Canada Who Won? British Significance? Patriots wanted to capture the area and convince the French speaking colonists to join in their cause against Britain. It was unsuccessful and was the first major defeat of the Revolutionary War for the Americans. This took a toll on their moral and never again did Americans seek Canadian populace to help them fight this war.

Trenton and Princeton Location: New Jersey Who won? Americans Significance? Both victories greatly boosted Patriot morale and convinced more Americans to support the Patriot cause.

Saratoga Location: New York Who Won? Americans Significance? It was the biggest victory yet, and it marked the turning point of the war, bringing a major foreign power to aid in the American cause…France.

Yorktown Location: Virginia Who Won? Americans (with the help of the French) Significance? This ended the fighting in American colonies. Peace negotiations were underway and in 1783 The Treaty of Paris formally ended the war between Great Britain, France, and the United States

Declaration of Independence During the various battles the Continental Congress asked Thomas Jefferson and others to write a declaration of independence. Why? They needed a document to declare and explain why the colonies had to become independent of Britain. In this document, Jefferson wrote what many Americans believed about their rights such as: people have the right to live, the right to be free, and the right to seek happiness. Also, It says that people have rights that cannot be taken away, lists the complaints against the king, and argues that the colonies have to be free to protect the colonists’ rights. The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776.
