LABORATORY SAFETY RULES Safety is everyone’s business! An awareness of current safety codes and regulation is necessary to make the laboratory a safe place for students to work. The following statements are offered as suggested safety guidelines for the teacher and the student. 1.No student is to work in the science laboratory without a science teacher present. 2.All accidents must be reported to the teacher. 3.Remember at all times that the laboratory is a place for serious work. Horseplay is never tolerated. 4.Do only the experiments assigned or approved by the teacher. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited. 5.Safety glasses are required when setting up, performing, and cleaning up after an experiment or when anyone in the room is performing an experiment (this is a state law). 6.Fasten long hair back. 7.Do not touch chemicals with your hands. Wash your hands before leaving the laboratory. 8.Never taste chemicals. 9.Use proper techniques when observing an odor. 10.Allow ample time for glass to cool.

11. Know the location of your fire extinguisher and use proper technique to extinguish a fire. 12. Carefully read the label on the bottle of any chemical, paying close attention to any warning. Double-check the identity of the chemical with your laboratory manual. 13. Never return excess chemicals to their stock containers. 14. When heating liquids in a test tube, always aim the mouth of the test tube away from all people. 15. Never go barefoot in the science department. 16. Never eat in the laboratory area. 17. Chemical spills must be cleaned up immediately, using proper techniques. All spills should be reported to the teacher. 18. Students and teachers should be aware of the location of all safety equipment. 19. Report all injuries, no matter how trivial. 20. Keep all apparatus and desktops clean. 21. Use only soap and water as a cleaning agent unless otherwise directed. 22. Place broken glass and solid substances in designated containers. Keep insoluble wastes out of the sinks. 23. Most liquids may be flushed down the sinks with water unless otherwise directed. Turn on the water first, then, slowly pour the liquid into the sink. 24.Before leaving the laboratories, check to ensure that the gas and water have been turned off.

Safety Equipment 1.Broken glass box 2.Lights 3.Emergency gas shutoff 4.Exit 5.Fire blanket 6.Eye wash 7.Fire extinguisher 8.Safety goggles 9.Emergency shower (3414-Bio Prep Room) 10.Fire alarm box (by third floor bathroom)

SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S BUSINESS!! Note to student: You will not perform any experiment or be present in the classroom while performing any experiment until you have: Carefully read the “laboratory safety rules” included in this packet, Studied and reviewed the emergency procedures for laboratory instruction, Passed the Safety test with an 80% or better, and Signed the following student safety contract. STUDENT SAFETY CONTRACT I, ____________________________________, have read and fully (Print Full Name) understand the laboratory safety rules and other safety procedures to be followed in the science laboratory at Parkway South Senior High. I will: Follow all instructions given by the teacher. Protect eyes, face, hands, and body while conducting class activities. Know the locations of first aid and fire fighting equipment. Conduct myself in a responsible manner at all times in a laboratory situation. I agree to abide by the safety regulations as set forth above and also in any additional printed instructions by the teacher and/or district. I further agree to follow all other written and verbal instructions given in class. _________________________________________________ DateStudent Signature I acknowledge that my son or daughter is entering into a safety contract to facilitate learning laboratory skills in the best possible environment. ________________________________ Acknowledgement by Parent
