DEVELOPING YOUR CHILD’S MATHS SKILLS Parents as Teachers (PAT) Presented by Mrs Maree Anderson

IMPORTANCE OF NUMBER SKILLS It’s almost impossible to get through a day without using maths in some way, because our world is full of numbers to handle and problems to solve. Studying maths provides you with the tools to make sense of it all, making life that little bit easier.

FUTURE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Maths skills are essential for career success in the 21 st century. It has been estimated that 75% of the fastest growing occupations require Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills and knowledge.75%

NUMERACY CONTINUUM K-10 The continuum outlines a progression of learning that can be used when observing students working on problems in mathematics.

MENTAL COMPUTATION MOST COMMON FORM OF COMPUTATION USED IN EVERYDAY LIFE  Mental computation refers to the process of working out and obtaining exact or approximate answers mentally. When calculating mentally, students select from a range of strategies, depending on the numbers used.  To develop mental computation in the classroom, teachers can encourage students to explain how they arrived at their answers and to compare their strategies with those of other students.
