Talk Outline WBS Element Scope Performance Requirements Cost Summary Schedule Risks Summary January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)2

WBS 1.04 Scope Design, fabricate, deliver to KEK and test the barrel KLM scintillator readout modules for layers 0 and 1. Specify, procure, implement and commission the high voltage power supplies for the barrel and endcap KLM scintillator modules. Design, implement and commission the KLM track trigger Implement the KLM-associated software January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)3

Performance Requirements (1) Performance requirements: – Identify muons with efficiency of 90% or higher and an impurity of 10% or less for momenta above 1 GeV/c. – Detect K L mesons with a momentum-dependent efficiency up to 70% with an angular resolution of 2° or less. – Reject neutron background at a rate of up to 100 Hz/cm 2. K L Detection Efficiency µ Detection Efficiency January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)4

Performance Requirements (2) Design specifications: – Each assembled scintillator strip (including WLS fiber, photosensor, and preamplifier) provides a signal corresponding to at least 15 pixels for the passage of a cosmic ray muon through the far (mirrored) end of the scintillator – Each assembled scintillator strip has a timing resolution of <10 ns – Each phi-view scintillator strip plane has an active coverage of >95% – Each z-view scintillator strip plane has an active coverage of >92% – Each pair of planes has a joint active coverage of >92% Minimum functional requirement (per detector module): – Overall module detection efficiency of 80% within its fiducial surface area, averaged over all scintillators strips, measured using externally triggered cosmic rays January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)5

Performance Requirements (3) Key Performance Parameter: – Deliver to KEK a minimum of 32 barrel KLM detector modules that each pass the minimum functional requirement in post-shipping test Objective: – Deliver to KEK 34 barrel KLM detector modules that each exceed the minimum functional requirement in post-shipping test with an efficiency of 90% or more (averaged over the fiducial area) using externally triggered cosmic rays January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)6

Cost Summary <2% of Belle II Project Cost All costs are actual January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)7

Funding Sources Materials funded by US-Japan or by Project – Scintillator extrusions (Fermilab-NICADD) – Wavelength-shifting fiber (Kuraray) – Photosensors (Hamamatsu) – Preamplifiers (commercial fabricator) – Endcap high voltage crates and supplies (CAEN) – Barrel high voltage crates and supplies (CAEN) – Internal cables and connectors (commercial stock) – Module frames and sheaths (commercial stock) January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)8

Schedule (1) Key drivers/constraints: – Detector modules had to be delivered to KEK by Fall 2013 to clear way for other detector installations (endcaps, inner detectors) CD-3a was approved in November 2012 to start the assembly, setup and test of the production line for the detector modules January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)9

R&D, procurement Fabrication, QA/QC Shipping, post-ship test Install & commission (post-project) BKLM Mechanical KLM Trigger HW KEK Procure; deliver to VT Install & commission (post-project) Schedule (2) Coding, testing January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)10

Risks Initial elicitation completed in June 2012 Major risks: – Project does not receive US-Japan funding in August 2012 as planned, delaying procurement of scintillators, photosensors and preamps. (Cost) – Barrel costs more than estimated and must be procured using DOE funding rather than US-Japan funding. (Cost) No mitigation needed: all risks are retired January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)11

Conclusion for WBS 1.04 CD-3a approved in November 2012 Delivery to KEK and post-delivery testing of installation-ready modules completed in October 2013 Post-project installation of 32 modules completed in mid-November; to be commissioned in February 2014 KLM Trigger initial implementation completed in August 2013 WBS 1.04 has been completed January 2014Leo Piilonen, US Belle II Directors Review (Pre CD-2/3)12
