THE CALL TO WORSHIP [Pastor / CONGREGATION] Based on James 1:2-3; 1 Peter 4:12-13; Matthew 5:12 Count it all joy, my brothers and sisters, WHEN YOU ARE CONFRONTED WITH VARIOUS TRIALS, knowing that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. SO DON’T BE SURPRISED WHEN YOU ARE CONFRONTED WITH FIERY ORDEALS.

Again, don’t be surprised like something unexpected was taking place. INSTEAD, REJOICE FOR YOU ARE SHARING IN CHRIST’S SUFFERINGS. Then you will rejoice and be glad. YES, YOU WILL REJOICE AND BE GLAD WHEN, YOU STAND IN GOD’S PRESENCE AT THE LAST DAY.

‘THE OPENING HYMN OF PRAISE’ [ AMERICAN ENGLISH VERSION] #33 IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE, GOD ONLY WISE

(1) Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Your great name we praise.

(2) Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, Nor wanting, or wasting, You rule all in might; Your justice, like mountains, high soaring above Your clouds, which are fountains of of goodness and love.

(3) To all, life You give us, to both great and small; In all life You live there, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish but no change in You.

(4) All praise we would render; O help us to see That only the splendor of light hides You now; And so let Your glory, almighty, impart, Through Christ in His story, Your Christ in our hearts.

A TIME OF SHARING WITH GOD’S CHILDREN OF ALL AGES

THE HEBREW SCRIPTURE 1 Samuel 1:1-20 Read by Neil VanDerJagt, CPA There was a certain man of Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. Now this man [Elkanah] used to go up year by year from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh.

There, the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. Peninnah used to provoke Hannah severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; As often as Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, Penninah used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat.

Her husband, Elkanah, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a Nazirite until the day of his death.

He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.” As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.” “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”

Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.” She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast. Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah laid with his wife Hannah, and the L ORD remembered her. So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, ( שְׁמוּאֵל ) saying “Because I asked the L ORD for him.”

THE SONG OF PREPARATION (1) #660 I WILL SERVE YOU (American English Version) I will serve You because I love You; You have given life to me. I was nothing before You found me; You have given life to me. Heartaches, broken pieces, Ruined lives are why You died on Calv’ry. Your touch was what I longed for; You have given life to me.

(2) I will serve You because I love You; You have given life to me. I was nothing before you found me; You have given life to me. Heartaches, broken pieces, Ruined lives are why you died on Calv’ry. Your touch was what I longed for; You have given life to me.

THE SERMON FOUR QUALITIES FOUND IN THE PERSON WHOM GOD HONORS Text: 1 Samuel 1:1-20 Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein Bayshore Gardens Community Church

FIRST The person whom God honors is the one who recognizes, by faith, that some problems cannot be resolved without God’s INTERVENTION and HELP. See 1 Samuel 1:4-5

SECOND The person whom God honors tries to understand the problem being faced from God’s PERSPECTIVE, recognizing God’s absolute SOVEREIGNTY

THIRD The person whom God honors is willing to PRAY, Fervently, Sincerely, Consistently Humbly seeking God’s direction and guidance.

FOURTH The person whom God honors PRAISES God for answered prayer, even when God’s answer is not exactly what we might have wanted or expected.

(1)Hannah recognized, by faith, she had a problem that could be resolved ONLY with God’s INTERVENTION and HELP. (2)Hannah had a sincere desire to understand the problem she was are facing from GOD’S PERSPECTIVE, recognizing that God is absolutely SOVEREIGN. THE CLOSING HYMN #676 (American English Version) ‘O JESUS I HAVE PROMISED’

(1) O Jesus, I have promised to serve You to the end; be now and ever near me, my Master and my Friend. I shall not fear the battle if You are by my side, nor wander from the pathway if You will be my guide.

(2) O let me feel You near me; the world is ever near: I see the sights that dazzle, the tempting sounds I hear. My foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw still nearer and shield my soul from sin!

(3) O let me hear You speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will. O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; and speak to make me listen, O Guardian of my soul.

(4) O Jesus, You have promised to all who follow You that where You are in glory your servants shall be too. O guide me, call me, draw me, uphold me to the end, when You in glory take me, my Savior and my Friend.
