Practicalities of a complex success criteria model Viktória Horváth PhD student Department of Strategy and Project Management Corvinus University of Budapest PMUni 2014 Conferene 14 th May

Research aim Focusing on the beneficial changes achieved by a university development project contributing to the satisfaction of researchers representing one of the most significant stakeholder groups: analysing the success of a university grant application project, and contributing to a better understanding of the stakeholder attitude regarding the relationships between the beneficial changes achieved. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 2

Research question How may analysing stakeholder satisfaction provide a potential for a more complex understanding of project success? Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 3

Research method  (A) Literature review  Evolution of project success  Stakeholder satisfaction as a success criteria  Hierarchical approach of project success criteria  (B) Empirical research - both qualitative and quantitative research:  (B1) Interviews with the project management team  (B2) Interviews with the strategic apex of the university  (B3) Cluster analysis of secondary data (Ward method and Complete Linkage)  Database: results of an online survey Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 4

Propositions regarding the research outcomes and the success achieved on the project I. The project might be considered to be successful in terms of each criterion of the hierarchical approach. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 5

Propositions regarding the research outcomes and the success achieved on the project II. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 6 Identified clusters I. Statements measuring the development/improvement of institutional environment (A) Research culture, research strategy, capacity of the researchers (human capacity) (B) Infrastructure/working conditions II. Statements measuring individual development/improvement (C) Individual improvement in research and publication activity (D) Participation in international research projects and possessing international social capital (E) Control statement

Research outcomes I. – Drawn from literature review (A) Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 7 Input focused Output focused Success factors Success criteria

Research outcomes II. – Drawn from literature review (A) Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 8 Stakeholder satisfaction Client satisfactionProject triangle

Research outcomes III. - Drawn from empirical research (B1 and B2)  The project was completed on both time and budget, and according to the quality requirements (project triangle) – B1  The project has achieved the strategic goals of both the client organisation (that is i.e. beneficiary organization) and the donor organisation – B2 Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 9

Research outcomes III. - Drawn from empirical research (B3)  The researchers attitude towards beneficial changes achieved by the project was positive. (Outcome of the research completed by the management team of the project -supported by empirical evidence) Basic attitude analysis of the stakeholders.  Content clusters can be identified among the beneficial changes, which are basically in line with my proposition. Complex attitude analysis of the stakeholders. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 10

Research outcomes IV. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 11

Research outcomes V. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 12

Conclusions  Success criteria of the hierarchical approach proved to be an appropriate contextual framework to analyse project success.  Accessing stakeholder satisfaction could focus on the analysis of both the attitude (i.e. Likert-scale) and relationship between beneficial changes drawn from the attitude. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 13

Further research  Analyse the success of other (different) projects according to the hierarchical approach.  Developing the methodology of analysing stakeholder satisfaction.  Highlighting the ways of how project management (academics and practitioners) could use the results. Practicalities of a complex success criteria model 14
