Assists professional staff in developing a more effective and streamlined program 3. Share recommendations to adapt this structure to meet the needs of the SI Program at your institution

4 Background on SI Leader Professional Development Prior to Spring 2015, the SI Program at Purdue would hold monthly professional development meetings that would address a wide focus; would occur on a day of the week leaders did not have sessions All leaders were expected to attend, but sometimes class and other conflicts occurred and leaders would have to complete “make-up” assignments

6 Strengths: Majority of the group was all together Helped build community Fun! Areas for Growth: Not 100% attendance Professional staff would need to make up content with leaders not present; this was almost impossible to do Did not address every content area’s specific needs Sometimes leaders were more interested in socializing than professional development topic addressed Not sustainable for growing program

7 Team Approach to Professional Development As a response to the increase of leaders and the need for more individualized support, SI Teams replaced monthly whole-group professional development Using this structure, the professional staff divides leaders into content-specific teams For example, all of the biology leaders are a part of the biology team. Each team has a team leader

8 Team Approach to Professional Development As of Spring 2016, there were 8 content- specific teams.

9 SI Team Leader Application Process Returning leaders are invited to apply to be team leaders using an application the professional staff has created prior to the beginning of each new semester. The application requires leaders to explain why they are interested in taking on the additional responsibilities of being a team leader, and asks them reflect and explain how they are going to manage their time. Once applications are reviewed, team leaders are selected. There is one team leader per team. Team leaders are compensated 5 extra hours every 2 weeks on their timecards in addition to their regular job responsibilities.

14 SI Team Meetings Every month, teams meet for one hour on the date, time and location that best works best for them. Team leaders coordinate the meetings. They schedule the meetings with their teams at pre-semester training at the beginning of each semester. The professional staff do not attend the team meetings, but instead equip team leaders with the tools to successfully facilitate them. Before every team meeting, team leaders meet with the professional staff at the beginning of each month to prepare for it. These meetings are also pre-determined at pre-semester training.

18 Team Meeting Notes During team meetings, leaders discuss professional development articles or videos, they share their best session activities, and they also ask each other questions, share concerns, and brainstorm solutions. At the end of their meetings, team leaders type up notes using a provided template, and them to the professional staff to keep them informed. This aids professional staff in clarifying any confusion leaders are having, provide additional resources or support, and to improve the program through their suggestions. Professional staff takes turns responding to each leader’s notes

26 Peer Observations Added responsibility in Fall 2015 Team leaders observe team members at least once every three weeks & provide feedback; communicate with staff if they have any observation questions or concerns Turn in required peer observation form by designated due date In Spring 2016, leaders were observed 4 times throughout the semester by their team leaders alone; most leaders received an average of 9 observations total Team Leaders helped to create the new peer observation form

28 Development of SI Committees Initial Implementation in Fall 2015 Feedback we received from leaders: they enjoyed meeting with their teams and were learning a lot, but they missed the whole-group component of the previous monthly meeting structure Allows leaders to become even more involved in the growing program Since they were largely interested in the whole-group social aspect of meeting together, the professional development/ social committee was developed Marketing was an area we were really exploring more of (how can we get more students to attend sessions), and what better way than to involve our actual students in the process! Therefore, the marketing committee was created. Lastly, the pre-semester training team was created after student leaders wanted more involvement in the training process Team leaders are required to be on a committee; all leaders are encouraged to join at training, and are given time to sign up over the course of the two days

32 Professional Development Team Building Activity Professional Development Committee Demonstration Kitchen Sponsored Event, Spring 2016 Asked them to coordinate the event (including an agenda with learning objectives) Asked them to be in contact with leaders to promote the event and encourage their participation

33 Recommendations for Implementation Create an application and process of review and encourage returning leaders to apply! Determine teams in advance; create a document outlining the different teams, their courses they supplement, and contact information Have students schedule team leader meetings with you and additional professional staff together at your pre-semester training(s); make sure everyone has their schedules on-hand Schedule meetings with team leaders the first week of each month so they are equipped to meet with their team throughout the month

34 Recommendations for Implementation Have team leaders and their teams schedule each of their team meetings during training; this includes date, time, and location and make sure it is on a calendar they turn in to you, and also in their agendas If you have a leader agreement, make sure to include that attending team meetings are mandatory and cannot be made up If you have a semester calendar of upcoming dates, make sure to include the due date and time for team leaders to turn in their notes

36 Recommendations for Implementation Have an agenda for the team leader meetings Work with the leaders to create an agenda prior to each team meeting Have a template for team notes leaders can easily fill out Respond to team notes! Ask leaders for their help with the peer observation process and forms Have team leaders turn in their peer observation forms regularly Keep a checklist of peer observations to make sure team leaders are on track, but remain flexible

37 Recommendations for Implementation Create committees to help with leader involvement, investment, and to help with programmatic tasks Work with leaders to develop committees based on interest and need Equip leaders and committees with an outline of responsibilities and due dates Provide encouragement, challenge and support!
