Farm Bureau Grassroots policy organization The American Farm Bureau Federation has been recognized as a member of the "Power 25" most effective lobbying groups in Washington, D.C.

History of Farm Bureau Extension education movement occurring at land grant colleges shortly after the turn of the 20 th century Leaders operated as a "bureau" within the local chamber of commerce, hence Farm Bureau

History of Farm Bureau Several county Farm Bureaus began operating in South Dakota as early as In 1917, SD Farm Bureau Federation was founded. In 1919, South Dakota helped organize the American Farm Bureau Federation.

History of Farm Bureau 1921, SDFB-5600 members never went above until s membership fell to 500 members. Only member benefit was insurance. 1950s brought new programs and new member benefits ideas Wheat Referendum caused many Farm Bureau’s to reorganize.

History of Farm Bureau 1970s and 80s county and state Farm Bureau were broaden and expanded Insurance programs were strengthened Leadership training and involvement became a priority

Job Descriptions

President Presides at meetings and prepares the agendas Select committee members (approval by the board) & serve as ex-officio member of all committees Lead the board in goal setting and long range planning Ensure actions by the board are implemented Represent Farm Bureau on official business when the need arises Keep personally informed on issues and Farm Bureau's positions

Vice President Absence of the President preside at meetings, but always preside over Policy Development Committee Accomplish the objectives, goals, policies, and duties as determined by the board and membership Keep personally informed on issues and Farm Bureau's position Represent the organization on official business when asked by the president or board of directors

Secretary Maintain and preserve the official county minutes, records, documents and reports Record motions and other official actions taken by the board accurately. Minutes should have personal signature Prepare copies of board minutes and distribute them Notify state Farm Bureau of all changes of the board Prepare and send all official correspondence Assist with the preparation of the county program plan

Treasurer Annually provide a complete report of all financial transactions for audit Provide leadership in preparing the annual budget Ensure all financial records are kept up to date and accurate Act as the official custodian of the organization’s funds Disburse all funds as directed by official action

Board Member Determine the goals, objectives and administrative policies within the framework of the articles, bylaws and policies established by the membership Protect and control the assets and maintain the solvency though fiscally sound policies Approve the selection and appointment of committees Determine and review the activities, programs, and economic services offered to members
