Why do it??

 If you use material from books, journals, web sites, etc in an assignment without referencing is called plagiarism, and is regarded as a serious offence at colleges and universities.

 Is presenting other people’s work or words as your own, e.g., copying text from websites or other sources, without acknowledging your source….  Examples of plagiarism include:  Not using “quotation marks” if you have copied words directly from somewhere else  Cutting and pasting material from different sources without acknowledging the sources  Not listing ALL the sources used in your Reference List.

Avoiding plagiarism:  Make note of all items that you refer to when researching an assignment (author / title/date/publisher/web addresses, etc).  If you’re using our databases or the e- books, use the How to cite facility.  Use your Bookbag on the LRC catalogue to keep track of what you’ve borrowed

APA Referencing  This is the style of referencing used by West Coast Institute, and ECU.  We have the ECU reference guide for sale in the bookshop, and this is also available on-line  A handout showing some simple examples is in your packs.

 There are 2 Parts to any reference when using the APA Style 1. In Text Referencing This is contained in the Body of your assignment right next to the text being referenced and consists of (Author, Date, p.?) 2. End Text Referencing This is contained on a separate page at the end of your assignment titled References and contains all the information about your source. Author, Date, Title, Publisher, Place of Publication.

In-Text Referencing Direct quote - There are two ways to do this 1. “It is a normal part of education to make presentations to explain your analysis of a topic” (Clarke, 2005, p. 149). 2. According to Clarke (2005) “it is a normal part of education to make presentations to explain your analysis of a topic” (p. 149). Paraphrasing One method of demonstrating your analysis and understanding of a topic is by giving a presentation (Clarke, 2005).

Bibliography/Reference List These two terms are often used interchangeably, but are actually two different things. A Bibiliography is a list of every resource you have used while doing your research. A Reference List is a list of every resource that you have quoted from (either directly or indirectly) in your assignment. Items are listed in a Bibliography or a Reference List alphabetically by the author (or by title, if there is no author).
