The ranking of the TMOs is illustrated in a chart for each scene; the place that was voted on average for the individual tone-mapping operator and the standard deviation between the observers is plotted. The first place corresponds to the three points and the last place corresponds to zero points. Error bars illustrate the standard deviation between the different observers. Since the observers were asked only for the first three places and all other images were weighted with the last place, there is a strong shift to the lower places. The background image is a gray scale version of the best performing algorithm with the optimal exposure (linear=L, adaptive logarithmic=AL, Jones quadrant=JQ, histogram equalization=HE, simple retina=SR, photographic=PG, photoreceptor=PR, local histogram filter=HF). (a) Scenes mapped with the same tone-mapping operator applied on base images with increasing exposure. (b) Last question for one scene. The test person had to choose places 1 to 3 for the different tone- mapping operators. For the H0 hypothesis that all operators have the same mean, the p-value is 2 ⋅ 10−7 (linear=L, adaptive logarithmic=AL, Jones quadrant=JQ, histogram equalization=HE, simple retina=SR, photographic=PG, photoreceptor=PR, local histogram filter=HF). (a) Box plot of the average tone-mapping operator performance results over all scenes. The center of a box is the median of points that an operator scored. The box top and bottom line depict the 25th and 75th percentiles. The whiskers extend to the farthest sample within a region of 1.5 times the interquantile range. (b) 95% confidence intervals around the mean points; one operator scored over all scenes. Overlapping intervals hint at low statistical difference at this 95% confidence level. The set of rightmost boxes is the average of the accurately predicted relations for each metric over all scenes. The lines on the average boxes depict the standard deviation of the accurately predicted relations. For all scenes, our proposed Naka-Rushton RMS matches the survey results best with 70%. The numerical values of this plot can be found on the survey website.
